It depends on the article, the ads, and the site.  It certainly helps.

It's much nicer to ask people to be kind than to try to force them.  I'm sure 
plenty of our readers block ads on a regular basis and there are ways to deny 
them access to articles, but fighting that battle is likely not worth 
anyone's time.
