Dear Everybody,
Sorry that I haven't posted for so long. I think that we need to start 
organising meetings pretty soon. However, I'm in Frances for the next two 
weeks... However, I think a meeting sometime around the 19th of December 
(Sunday) Might be an idea if not everyone is on holiday etc.
Also, would people like me to set up a Perl UK jobs 'center' on the OXPM 
website? I've had many job offers that I can't accept, and everybodyt asks 
me if I know anyone instead. (For this reason, if you're looking for a job, 
look at the bottom of this page).
And finally, the topic for this week, to breathe some life into this list, 
is, the best way of encrypting a paragraph with a seven digit number. Ideas?

Hmmm. True. But, it could use compilcated arithmatic to generate the 
decryption method, making it take some time. Anyway, that's the challenge...

But then won't it take some time to encrypt and decrypt the message even
if you have the key?

I know this is a religious one, but how about having reply-to set on
list messages? I replied and hadn't realised it went to you rather than
the list. My fault too, but I like reply-to's.

Possibly. But maybe that's the challenge. A prize of a pint at our next 
meeting (I'm thinking in terms of a pub here) for the winner, judged by me?
It might also beinteresting to follow up on a simple encryption method I 
devised when I was ten: Each letter that you use has ten different numbers. 
One of these is picked randomly each time you want to write a letter. 
However, this could be improved by each letter having a number of 'keys' 
equal to its use in normal english prose. And the 7 or eight or whatever 
digit password is used to generate these numbers, and then to make a 
decoding key at the other end. Ideas on that front?

That would be a good idea.  Then people will begin to see how many
really cool Perl jobs are out there, and spend more effort honing
their skills :-)

I think I will, but it will have to wait - I am in Paris, with a very dodgy 
internet connection, and I have difficulty with using the French keyboards. 
Does anyone have any ideas for an existing job posting script, that I can 
butcher, or failing that, wants to offer a little help with the version that 
I may need to write? Also, I am spending a lot of time lost on the metro, 
just to add complications.

Nobody has any ideas for a good place to meet?
