Majordomo is some seriously old code. It was written for Perl4. While it is still under maintenance, the current version will run under Perl 4.036. We're talking super crufty and not all nice and modular. On the other hand, Mailman is newer, clean and easy to maintain. Just because you like Perl doesn't mean that you need to eschew nice software written in other languages. That said, if you are looking for Perl based mailing list software, then Siesta looks good. I have no experience with it, but there was a good article on perl.com about it a few months ago: http://www.perl.com/pub/a/2004/02/05/siesta.html Have fun, -Colin. I would compare it (loosely!) to a Linux-targetted site running on a Windows server, or vice-versa. I would like to think that the Perl community would use Perl. On a different note, I'm pleasantly surprised that there is anyone actually on the Oly-pm list. It hasn't had any traffic save a few messages last year for the entire duration of my membership. Is Perl lost on the Olympia area, or are we all just reclusive? Thanks for the pointer on Siesta. I had never heard of it. I might give that a look-see. -- Dusty Colin Meyer wrote: >On Mon, May 24, 2004 at 10:28:29AM -0700, Dusty Wilson [Zetein] wrote: > > >>Why are we using Mailman (in Python) when Majordomo is written in our >>native Perl? >> >> > >Majordomo is some seriously old code. The root index page indicates that they had just completed the reinstall and apologized for the move to Mailman on such short notice. At the moment, there is just a Red Hat Enterprise test page. I know of a person that is part of the Oly LUG. I could either talk to him about such meetings, or pass his name/contact info along to the person that would need it here on the Oly-pm list. I write in Perl for a living, so there are many-o-many things I could show off. Unfortunately the more interesting things are all under wraps or are confidential-esque client projects. Almost all of my work involves interfacing Perl with Flash, XML, and MySQL databases.
