Message-ID: <00ac01c84047$f055a720$a000000a@EDP17> Folks. I was looking for a good place to donate my used computer "stuff" so that it could be put to good use, and the folks who were at the December meeting came up with two viable alternatives: PC Community (PC users group) at http://pcc.org Alameda County Computer Resource Center at http://accrc.org Here's my experience so far: First, I tried pcc.org. They are all volunteer, put together working systems from parts, and donate them to local groups that need help. They have a nice online form (fill-in-the blanks PDF) to submit a request and have them get back to you. They offer to pick up the goods. Unfortunately, I never got a response back from them :-( Second, I tried accrc.org. You have to drop things off at their site, so it was a little more work (and they're in Berkeley which is close to me), but eminently doable. However, when I arrived at the site, they were more recycling (ala the drop-off points for Goodwill Industries - large wooden bins into which stuff just gets dumped) than computer repurposing. I had an old HP inkjet portable printer which came in two parts plus a small box of related parts and even tho I tried to get the guy to put them all together, it was clear that he either didn't understand or didn't care. I'm convinced that this particular printer will most likely be rendered less usable as a result. So. it's a mixed bag. Next time (or if they manage to contact me from the present attempt), I'm going to try pcc.org. they may actually "care" for this stuff a little more which will make me feel as if it really will be put to good use. HTH.have a great holiday season! .jon -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... OSCON is the crossroads of all things open source, a vibrant meeting ground for the entire community to inspire, debate, motivate, make deals, and connect face to face. The 2008 conference will present the key players and issues influencing open source today and explore the potential for open source tomorrow. We're seeking proposals from people in tune with the heartbeat of open source, whether you're a hacker, designer, trainer, system administrator, or entrepreneur. - Have you launched a project that will revolutionize the way we think, vote, sell, dream, or surf the Web? - Do you grok the deep mysteries of crafting beautiful code? - Have you built a successful business that not only benefits from open source, but fully participates in the virtuous cycle of contribution and collaboration? We invite you to share your experiences, expertise, analysis, and ideas. We are looking for proposals for four kinds of presentations: - 45-minute sessions - 3-hour tutorials - Panel discussions - Demonstrations There will be 14 tracks, including Linux, Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby, Java, Databases, Desktop Applications, Web Applications, Mobile, Administration, Security, People, Business, and Emerging Topics. Submit your proposal anytime before midnight, February 4, 2008. For submission guidelines and to submit your proposal, go to: http://en.oreilly.com/oscon2008/public/cfp/13 If you know someone who would be a good speaker, please pass this email on. Topics we'd like to include in the OSCON 2008 program include: - Parallelization, grid, and multicore technologies - The strengths that will carry open source beyond the "gold rush" - Open source in smart phones and mobile networked devices - Open hardware and licensing - Tools for the administration and deployment of large server farms - Ajax, Javascript, standards-based design, and other client-side web issues - AI, machine learning, and other ways of making software smarter than the people using it - The spread of open source into law, culture, data, and services and the accompanying issues and lessons - Open source in democracy, politics, government, and education - Best practices for building a business model around open source - Virtualization, appliances, and their creation and deployment This is by no means an exhaustive list, so feel free to propose other open source topics. Keep in mind that sessions and tutorials should be based on real-world scenarios, delivering information that can be acted upon and tools that can be put to use. Even if public speaking is not your thing, you'll want to participate in OSCON 2008. So save the dates, July 21-25, and plan on meeting us in Portland. Early registration opens in March. To make your trip even more worthwhile, the conference is conveniently co-located with the second Ubuntu Live Conference at the Portland Convention Center. The icon editor was saving the file incorrectly, for some reason. I downloaded GIMP, opened the file, re-saved it (no changes) and now the file works OK. 2. Browsers (at least some of them) cache the favicon once it's loaded and won't reload it unless you clear cache. Now it works just fine. The idioms used in there are basically from perl4, and a lot of the recommendations, in my humble opinion, are just plain wrong. I can't say it looks quite that bad to me, though there are things I might complain about (it delays talking about "use strict;" for too long, for example). I would suggest starting here: http://perldoc.perl.org/perlintro.html (which is the same content as "man perlintro" on a unix box).
