I'm surprised you can't get Test::More to install. If you've got a perl that's 5.8.0 or higher, then you should just have it: it's a core module. What version of perl are you using (and does your perlmodlib.pod include Test::More under the 'Standard Modules' section)? If updating your perl isn't an option, then this may help: C:\>perl -MTest::More -le "print $INC{q,Test/More.pm,}; print $Test::More::VERSION" C:/Perl/lib/Test/More.pm 0.45 AFAICT Test::More is Pure Perl, so in a pinch you should be able to just download the tarball and pop it in place somewhere in your @INC. Recent changes include: Strictures and warnings are now the default in the main program. Syntax of subtype and enum declarations more like normal declarations. Subtypes are now declared with "subtype" keyword. Symbolic ref syntax reverted back to ::($expr). Syntax of operators now defined to leverage hash subscript syntax: infix:?+? # op name always quoted now circumfix:?[ ]? # multipart ops are now slices, no ... needed circumfix:{'[',']'} # same thing Special rule for splitting symmetrical operator names is gone, use slice. Special rules for recognizing the ends of operator names are gone. Current class is $?CLASS or ::?CLASS, not ::_. Current sub is $?SUB, not &_. There is no bogus first argument to the pair-arg variant of bless. See the Synopses for details. Or read the Apocalypses, and search for the string "Update:". These files are all in utf-8. Looking on the web, I see http://www.oaklandlibrary.org/Branches/rockridge.htm I think that's the library you were referring to. (If not, let me know.) It looks like their hours on Tuesday only go to 8pm. To use their facilities it looks like we likely would have to meet on Saturdays. (My understanding and my experience is that keeping the meeting time constant is a really good idea.) Looking further at http://www.oaklandlibrary.org/about/meeting-room_policy.html I think it is debatable whether we qualify for using the room. At best, we are a low priority user. Also, I'm particularly discouraged by items 4 and 14. Given my limited time for this search, I'm inclined to explore other possibilities. However, if you are motivated to explore further, kool. Schwartz entitled "Intermediate Perl." I would like to extend the same offer to Oakland Perl Mongers as we did for the last seminar. Your members will be able to attend for a special rate of $99.50, which is 50% off the regular rate. Below are the details: On November 20, 2004, Hurricane Electric is hosting "Intermediate Perl," the second seminar in a two part series that focuses on Perl Programming, in Fremont, CA. Randal L. Schwartz, twenty-year veteran of the software industry and renowned O'Reilly author of numerous books including Learning Perl and Programming Perl, will be the speaker. This comprehensive seminar is designed for people who have a good background in the basics of Perl. It will cover advanced data structures in Perl, which will help participants identify the appropriate data structure that can greatly simplify development and maintenance of programs, and will also show participants how to keep their Perl program running smoothly even when it must grow past the 100-lines-of-code barrier. Attendees will receive a free copy of Randal L. Schwartz's popular O'Reilly Nutshell book, Learning Perl Objects, References & Modules. If you or your members are interested in attending please feel free to call me at 510.580.4141 or email me at tmorales@he.net. Message-ID: <20041112224900.73867.qmail@web50201.mail.yahoo.com> I'd like to thank both Kester Allen and Steve Fink for their excellent presentations at this Tuesday's meeting. The meeting themes were "Perl 6 and Parrot." Kester spoke about the new Perl6::Rules package. He showed several examples of rule definition using the package. His presentation and examples were very clear and practical. It was very evident just how powerful this new package is, especially for Perl programs that employ a particular regular expression in more than one place. Conceptually, I think of Perl6::Rules as the "Cascading Style Sheet of regular expressions." Steve then followed with a talk starting with some conceptual issues of Perl6::Rules, followed by a discussion of Perl 6. Steve's presentation covered Parrot a bit and the end. Kester and Steve's presentations complimented each other very well. I definitely plan on looking at Perl6::Rules the next time I have the need to write script employing regular expressions. - Adrien __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? O'Reilly is pulling together a new book called "Word Annoyances" and, once again, we'd like your help! As you might guess, "Word Annoyances" ponders the problems, snarls, quirks, bugs, and just dumb things about Word that drive users nuts. The annoyances will encompass a range of topics: general misbehavior, creating and saving documents, text entry and editing, formatting and layout, printing, tables, macros, etc. Word is the most ubiquitous--and probably the most annoying--word processor on the planet. If [you] have annoyances [you'd] like to see solved, ... email marsee@oreilly.com with "Word Annoyances" in the subject line. [Please] note what version of Word and Windows [you're] using. As always, thanks for sharing. We'll make sure to get copies of "Word Annoyances" sent to your group shortly after publication. --Marsee *** An example: The Annoyance The wretched animated paper clip keeps appearing every time I try to get help from Office, and sometimes even when I'm just working. How can I get rid of it? The Fix Some people love the Office Assistant characters--Clippit (the paper clip), Rocky the Dog, the Office Cat, the Genius, Mother Nature--but I've never met these people. Everyone who mentions the Office Assistant wants to get rid of it. And anyone enthusing about the wonders of Merlin is a good candidate for the target end of a fire-hose demonstration. To prevent the Office Assistant from appearing, right-click the Office Assistant character that's currently bugging you and click Properties on the shortcut menu. On the Options tab of the Office Assistant dialog box, clear the Use The Office Assistant check box. Click OK. What if you want the Office Assistant back? Simply choose Help > Show The Office Assistant, and the brute is back with you. Invoking the Office Assistant like this selects the Use The Office Assistant check box on the Options tab of the Office Assistant dialog box, so you'll need to clear this check box when you want peace and quiet again. ------------------------------------------------------- From george at metaart.org Tue Nov 16 02:46:37 2004 From: george at metaart.org (George Woolley) Date: Tue Nov 16 02:34:30 2004 Subject: [oak perl] Fwd: Apress Extends Experts Choice Rebate Through November Message-ID: <200411160046.37231.george@metaart.org> ---------- Forwarded Message ---------- Subject: Apress Extends Experts Choice Rebate Through November Date: Monday 15 November 2004 9:37 pm From: "Apress Newsletter" To: George Woolley Last month we alerted you to the great savings that could be had if you purchased Apress books at participating bookstores.
