He'll be exploring the promises of Linux and trying to determine how realistic they are, because, as Andy writes, "In many areas, the important foundations have been laid--but a lot remains to be done." http://oreillynet.com/pub/wlg/5357 ***Open Source and NASA's Mars Rover NASA's recent Mars Rover mission uses a host of open source tools. Three members of the team presented how they promoted open source software at NASA, use it in the project, and hope to release more code in the future. Ann Barcomb reports. http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/onlamp/2004/08/02/oss_mars_rover.html --------------------- Mac --------------------- ***21.5 Things You Can Do with Office 2004 By now you've probably read about all the new features in Microsoft Office 2004. Good. Because we're not going to cover them here again. Instead, Giles Turnbull shows you 21 and a half things you can do in Office that you might not have previously realized. http://www.macdevcenter.com/pub/a/mac/2004/08/03/ms_office.html ***Creating DVD/VCD Photo Slide Shows for Your Mac Let's face it: you still have friends and family who've yet to enter the computer age. And yet you'd like to send them copies of your vacation photos (or your newborn, or your cat) taken with your digital camera. What to do? Wei-Meng Lee offers an alternative to using iPhoto for creating slide-show CDs--Ulead's DVD PictureShow for Mac. He walks us through how to burn digital photos onto disc so anyone with a DVD/VCD player can view them. http://www.macdevcenter.com/pub/a/mac/2004/07/27/DVDslideshowonMac.html ***OS 9, Mine, All Mine What serious Mac fan in his or her right mind would consider booting anything other than OS X? Well, lots of them. Giles Turnbull interviews a handful of dedicated OS 9 users to find out why. http://www.macdevcenter.com/pub/a/mac/2004/07/23/os9.html --------------------- Windows --------------------- ***Windows Server Hacks: Creating a Password Reset Disk Losing a password for an account can be anything from a pain to a disaster. Mitch Tulloch, author of "Windows Server Hacks," shows you how to solve the problem by creating a password recovery disk. http://www.windowsdevcenter.com/pub/a/windows/2004/08/03/password_reset.html ***Power Up the Windows Clipboard The Windows Clipboard is about as useless a utility as you can imagine. Throw it away and replace it with one of these clipboard power tools. http://www.windowsdevcenter.com/pub/a/windows/2004/08/03/clipboard.html ***Rapid Application Development with VB.NET 2.0 Jesse Liberty has supported the idea that it really doesn't matter if you program in C# or in VB.NET, since both are just syntactic sugar layered on top of the Microsoft Intermediate Language--the true language of .NET. But that appears to be changing with Whidbey. Get a look at the new My Object in VB.NET 2.0 in this article by Jesse, author of "Programming Visual Basic .NET, 2nd Edition." http://www.ondotnet.com/pub/a/dotnet/2004/08/02/libertywhidbey.html --------------------- Java --------------------- **XML-Java Data Binding Using XMLBeans XMLBeans, currently in the Apache incubation process, is a promising framework for providing XML/Java data binding unmarshalling well-formed XML into Java objects, and marshalling Java objects into XML files. There is music scheduled at the Festival as early as 11:00 am that day, so anyone wanting to spend sometime at the festival before the start of sig-beer-west can show up at 11:00 to listen. The last musical event is schedule for 9:00 pm that day. When you show up, you should look for some kind of home made sig-beer-west sign. We will try to make it obvious who we are. :-) Note: Please look for the sig-beer-west sign, not for a particular person. sig-beer-west may have different hosts from month to month. Everyone is welcome at this event. We mean it! Please feel free to forward this information and to invite friends, co-workers, and others (all of legal drinking age) who might enjoy lifting a glass with interesting folks from all over the place. Can't come this month? Mark your calendar for next month. (Do it now before you forget!) sig-beer-west occurs on the third Saturday of each month. Want to suggest a venue? Suggestions for new places to sip and gab are always welcome. Have questions, comments, or other ideas concerning sig-beer-west? Send all correspondence to the current sig-beer-west Instigator. How do I know if I'm a techie, or a friend of one? A: Well, actually, you don't have to be a techie to attend. You just have to be able to find the sig-beer-west sign at this month's event. That's it. Simple, huh? 2. Q: I'm not really a beer person. In fact I'm interested in hanging out, but not in drinking. Would I be welcome? A: Absolutely! The point is to hang out with fun, interesting folks. Please do join us. 3. Q: Is parking difficult, like maybe I should factor this into my travel time? A: Usually, but the earlier you arrive, the better your chances of finding a spot. 4. Q: I've been thinking about attending sig-beer-west for some time now. Maybe I should start with this event? A: Yes!! ______________________________________________________________________ sig-beer-west was started in February 2002 when a couple Washington, D.C. based systems administrators who moved to the San Francisco Bay area wanted to continue a [45]dc-sage tradition, sig-beer, which is described in dc-sage web space as: SIG-beer, as in "Special Interest Group - Beer" ala ACM, or as in "send the BEER signal to that process". The original SIG-beer gathering takes place in Washington DC, usually on the first Saturday night of the month. I'd much rather use the GUI Tk Debugger to the command line debugger. But I'm not a command line junkie like some. I use the command line for doing things quickly that are not scriptable and I write scripts to do things I can automate. For things I only do occaisionally, I prefer a GUI so I don't have to remember arcane process or commands. So, I'd use the debugger for things that can't resolved with a quick print statement or two. I'd use the GUI test unit app for unit testing, but expect to script a full "regression" test. I'm Zed. I've been programming in Perl for about 8 years, mostly doing database-driven web applications. I'd say LAMP, but it's all been on non-Linux Unices (though I run Linux at home.) I love Perl. It's the language where I've felt most at home, where I can get from my thoughts to code fastest, with a minimum of tedium and overhead. And I love the playfulness of the Perl community. I'm an intermittent participant on PerlMonks. I'm unemployed, and hope to correct that soon. (Discouraging note: I see about a dozen each of Java and MSFT-technologies web programming positions for every Perl position. Even PHP has been beating Perl in terms of numbers of jobs listed.) I might make the next meeting -- don't know yet. Talk to you all later. I love Perl and the Perl community too. Since I started using it, Perl has been easily my favorite language. Yep, I love the community too and the playfulness is central to that. You've given me another reason for wishing the release of Perl 6.0.0. As far as I can tell, it's going to be way kooler than Perl 5, especially when you add in Parrot. My thought is that once it's released there will be a major surge of interest in Perl. Unfortunately, that doesn't help now. After reading and reflecting on your introduction, I have a few (hopefully interested) questions. Please feel free to ignore them if you wish or play with them, or even answer them straight forwardly. Or do different things with different questions. re the community: * Are there some instances of Perl related playfulness that you enjoyed on the web? * What else do you like about the Perl community besides its playfulness? * What is it that you especially like about PerlMonks? re a job: * What would be a good job in your mind? * Does working for O'Reilly appeal to you? * If yes, have you looked at http://jobs.oreilly.com? re other: * What would make a Perl group meeting worthwhile for you? Skoal, George P.S. If it happens that one or more of the questions interest you but you prefer not to answer them on the list, feel free to email me directly.
