From chicks at chicks.net Sun Sep 24 22:53:44 2000 From: chicks at chicks.net (chicks@chicks.net) Date: Thu Aug 5 00:08:08 2004 Subject: 27 September - [HRPM] Meeting Announcement Message-ID: Please pass the word on for the next Hampton Roads Perl Mongers meeting: What: The monthly Hampton Roads Perl Mongers Meeting http://norfolk.pm.org/ Who: Everyone in Hampton Roads interested in perl. There are no dues or signup requirements. All are welcome to attend. Where: The meetings were alternating between Chesapeake and Newport News, but due to a change in employment, we're currently without a Chesapeake place to meet. August's meeting will be at the Jefferson Lab in Newport News. Directions on the web and below. When: 7:30 PM till whenever on Wednesday 27 September 2000 It's generally going to be on the last Wednesday of the month unless major holidays intervene. (This puts us consistantly one week before TWUUG.) Why: Why not? What could be better than to come and talk with others about the world's most fun programming language? Jabber, learn, teach, enjoy. Starbucks is not far away. Agenda: Whatever people on the HRPM mailing list decide! Various people who do perl rather often will be there to answer your perl questions. Some expected topics are on the site. ** This month Chris will teach a short course on DBI - Perl's interface to a wide variety of relational databases. Directions: http://norfolk.pm.org/location.shtml (This is an yet another improvement on last month's directions thanks to several sources at the last meeting. - chicks) Take 64 until you get to the exit for Oyster Point West. Upon exiting, you will be on Oyster Point Road headed toward Jefferson Ave. (If, after exiting, you find yourself approaching the Kiln Creek shopping center and passing Farm Fresh and Kmart, you've exited in the wrong direction, so turn around.) The third light ahead, and the biggest intersection, is Jefferson Ave. Turn left onto Jefferson and go to the second light. On your left is Jefferson Lab. On your right is Dixie Trailer park. Turn left into Jefferson Lab (Onnes Road) and go about 100 yards to the T-intersection at which Onnes ends. (Ignore the innocuous Guard Shack on your right. :) Turn left and head (in between all the flag poles) directly to CEBAF Center where the meeting will be held. Turn right just before you reach the circular drive in front of CEBAF Center, and park in the parking lot you will see on your left. Find your way into the building and to the building atrium. The atrium is right off the circular drive. Room L104 branches off the atrium on the right. It saved me having to stumble through learning DBI myself this morning. Like you said, it's not rocket science, but listening to Chris go over it was a lot nicer than just reading about it. Since I've started working at home, I don't get to hear discussions at work like I heard last night (unless I'm talking to the dog, but she's not much into Perl). It was fun! Message-ID: Where do you want to go today? Well personally I would love to go back to bed but my boss thinks that is not such a good idea so I thought I would write some observations from last nights Perl Mongers meeting at Jefferson Labs. First and foremost I would like to thank the Lab for allowing us to meet there. It is a great facility and there has never been a problem getting in or anything like that. Good people! I am posting this to both the twuug mailing list and the Perl Mongers mailing list. The reason is to give everyone a chance to see what is going on at the meetings and to encourage others to attend. The Twuug, PLUG, HRLUG and PM groups are related by a common interest and desire to make our computing lives a little more diffi.... I mean easier. Chris did a nice talk on the DBI module. Showing us not only how to use the commands but little tricks that can only be learned from experience. If you have any questions about how to use DBI or where might it be useful then this was the one - but you missed it! I am sure that it will come back around again. Following the talk we had time for discussion of various topics including what we would like to cover. During the discussion it became obvious to even the casual of observers that this meeting is the only group that covers programing by itself. This made it possible then to even think about covering other topics/languages other than Perl! Things like python, php zope and such things. Chris made the statement that it is always good to know the weaknesses of the other languages to show how good Perl is really...It was pretty much decided that next month we would be privileged to enjoy a talk on TKPerl. This from a person who had figured it all out and is using it for a project. Some seem to think we got the horse before the cart - no wait that's correct isn't it - whatever - we had introductions at the end of the meeting. I don't know about the remainder of the group but I learned some interesting things from the intros. The first thing was that everyone was so nice (course anyone who speaks Perl is nice by default in some circles). Another thing (POP QUIZ !!!) - How many of you knew that CNU is running a Beowolf cluster? Did you know? I didn't know that! RC are you paying attention? Maybe twuug or plug can have a road trip one day and take a look at it. It's about to double in size soon. There was also a nice young physicists who is translating some of the documentation for KDE2 (he happens to be from Germany and will be going back soon). In fact I am sure that I was the dullest one there! In all we had a good time and I look forward to upcoming meetings. If you are interested in programming then give the Perl Mongers a try. ---------------------------------- E-Mail: Lyman Byrd Tel: 757.543.6801x253 Date: 28-Sep-2000 Time: 08:59:31 The opinions expressed here do not necessarily reflect those of Metro Machine Corp. ---------------------------------- From chicks at chicks.net Thu Sep 28 11:48:52 2000 From: chicks at chicks.net (chicks@chicks.net) Date: Thu Aug 5 00:08:08 2004 Subject: [HRPM] PM Meeting notes... I think it's worthwhile to learn the strenghts of various languages to improve your perspective. The more ways you have available to /think/ about something the more likely you are to be able to implement something cleanly. For example, it is easier to think of certain perl problems as if you were writing a finite state machine in awk. > It was pretty much decided that next month we would be privileged to > enjoy a talk on TKPerl. Many have experienced dbm and DBI problems with 5.6. I've seen CPAN.pm installing 5.6 and had to kill it on a couple of occasions. That's probably because there are some base modules that are revised in 5.6. I don't know if there's a better answer, but you probably want to blow away everything perl related on the box, reinstall the stock rpm's and hit ctrl-c before CPAN starts installing 5.6 next time. CPAN.pm shouldn't behave the way it does, but I haven't had a chance to come up with a good solution. -- What if this weren't a hypothetical question?
