I was cleaning up old stuff today and I found the HRPM thread about
CPAN.pm installing perl 5.6 when you were just trying to install a module.
I sent off a note to Andreas Koenig and he responded within a few hours
with the answer! Isn't perl great? :-)

It was damn bad broken, sure. It was fixed immediately after it
appeared the moment after perl-5.6.0 was released. If the bug has
reappeared since in some different manifestation, I'd need a bug
report.

Sure, please do. It's a mess because the bug of course still exists
for the old CPAN.pm which comes with old perls. The problem is that
old CPAN.pm do not recognize the file name perl-5.6.0.tar.gz as a perl
distribution.
