From mkraus at wildtechnology.net Wed Feb 2 18:55:24 2005 From: mkraus at wildtechnology.net (Michael Kraus) Date: Wed Feb 2 18:56:04 2005 Subject: [Nomads-pm] G'day! Message-ID: <519693398E70CC488E58B299BD11E87ABEA944@wild-svr1.ho.wildtechnology.net> G'day everyone... Just a quick hello, to introduce myself (albeit rushed) to the group. I'm currently located in Sydney, Australia - where there is no active Perl Mongers group. (Sydney.pm is now defunct unless some phoenix like behaviour occurs.) Additionally, as soon as I'm experienced enough, and have my $$$ worked out a bit better, I wish to travel and work in Europe and Israel. (So, I'm guessing this is probably the best .pm for me.) So "Hi!" .... And thanks to Kyle for setting the group up! (Btw, apologies for any long .sig - the mailserver here automatically adds a disclaimer) :( Regards, Michael S. E. Kraus B. Info. Tech. Message-ID: <519693398E70CC488E58B299BD11E87ABEA94B@wild-svr1.ho.wildtechnology.net> G'day! George replied to my thread, but accidently replied off list (so see below for his message - I did check that this was unintentional). I just found out that Sydney.pm is in the process of re-grouping. (Yay!) ... But I'm also delighted to be part of this non-geographic list. I guess there are a lot of Perl programmers in Sydney, but there still seems to be enough of a demand job wise to be able to get a nice paying job, /if/ you have the experience. (I'll let you know my thoughts further once I've been to Sydney.pm meet or two - but you may need to prompt me.) With Perl, I've done a small number of minor scripts. (Web forms, emailers and the ilk.) Currently I'm developing Wild's online ordering system. For this I'm using OO Perl. (I'm also quite interested in OO extreme-programming, e.g. Agile Software Development, Design Patterns, etc.) I've been programming with Perl only for a short time - I've been contracted here since last March, and developing in Perl for several months. What I like about Perl - it's flexibility, portability and CPAN. :) I like it's c-like syntax. I dislike aspects of it's OO'ness - but then again it was never designed as an OO language in the first place. (Not too much of grumble point for me, as I can, and do, still OOP in Perl.) :) Programming in Perl is as much about programming in community as it is programming in a specific language. Also, I'm a Linux and open source lover - which contribute to my liking of Perl. (CPAN is bloomin' fantastic!) Oh, yeah, just in case you didn't get it - CPAN is fantastic! ;) Out of my participation in Nomads.pm, I'm hoping to: * improve my Perl skills, in terms of speed and efficiency - in a "safe" environment * keep my skills and technical knowledge up to date * be part of a friendly and fun group * be recognised for my contributions, however great or small * keep my finger on the pulse of what is happening internationally with Perl developers * stay informed of my chances of contracting/working in Europe and Israel as a developer I guess I feel I'm one of the lucky ones - I get to work doing what I love to do. Being part of community groups like this is a support structure for that aspect of my life, and if I get contribute back in some small way then I'm somewhat honoured. Hope this answers your questions - feel free to ask more. All the best! Regards, Michael S. E. Kraus B. Info. Tech. (CQU), Dip. As you mention, I hadn't meant to communicate off-list. Also, thanks for giving strong answers to the three subjects I expressed an interest in. Sydney.pm: Glad to hear Sydney.pm is regrouping. I'd be most interested to hear how Sydney.pm is working out for you when you've been to a meeting or two. I'm glad you are open to saying. If it turns out you need prompting, that may well come. OO Perl: I think you may enjoy OO in Perl 6. Other Languages: It sounds like you know some other languages. I'd be interested in knowing the main ones, if you wish to say. I'm currently using CGI::Session as part of an online ordering system. I've been passing database primary keys back and forth between the client and server, with all values double checked upon being received at the server. The only problem is that I need to present the total price to the client at more than one point of operation, and I have been recalculating the price each time. How safe is it to store the pricing information on the session object itself - are their any security flaws or issues of which I should be aware? (I'm figuring it's pretty safe - but I'd rather be ultra-sure.) I guess, what I'm really asking is if there any methods of security violations associated with CGI::Session that I should be aware of...? Thanks heaps! Regards, Michael S. E. Kraus B. Info. Tech. It might be using a database or a file, and I've even seen a very silly person tweak it so it used cookies. Basically, the safest thing to do is be suspicious of anything that comes from outside your program. On the other hand, why do you want to store the total price in the first place? If it's because of performance concerns, then remember that the CPU cost of IO is generally higher than the cost of calculation for simple calculations such as price totals. Kind Regards, Brian Wisti http://coolnamehere.com/ P.S.
