Hey Dave, This may not fit you precisely, not local, not default 1GB RAM, but .. here it is. I just went through this a few months ago, enticed by the VPS pricing and then inevitably finding 128-256 RAM or a horror story about overselling and/or _fill in the blank_. I signed on at SectorLink about 2 months ago now. It's an unmanaged[1] dedicated (not VPS) w/2 static IPs, 512MB ram, paid annually = $40/month. Price hit sweet spot for me ... it it were $79, it may as well be $119, and so on. For dedicated, this was effectively half the going rate, or double the RAM & Xfer-limit, depending how you see it. So, the angle? It's unmanaged and they're hoping for the upsell. http://sectorlink.com/dedicatedservers.php - some details below I haven't visited Michigan to see their self-owned Data Center with my own eyes, but I'm happy thus far (as advertised w/zero problems). I plan to re-up after my 3-month plan, despite the fact my new partner (not in Cities) has an unmetered 5Mbit w/room to grow and plenty of rackspace. The SectorLink deal sitting on Fiber? I'm comfortable, and I'm tired of replacing parts on self-hosted. The trade off comes down to squeezing into the hardware the provide, they may be flexible (for a price). I'm interested if others have stories on other providers in this price range for dedicated. I don't work for SectorLink. Would I qualify for an affiliate bonus? I have no clue. Mostly, I'm just happy to report that after a dizzying amount of clicks and comparisons my choice has worked out well to date. -Jay [1] unmanaged, yes - but they do have some thoughts on keeping the systems 'up-to-date' (inquire within) Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3600+ Processor or .. Inevitably inertia and/or wallet keeps me at home. IIRC there was a thread on the local unix sysadmin list a couple years ago about a colo coop arrangement, where folks chipped in on a rackspace and also helped admin each others' boxes, which is especially nice when you're out of town and lightning hits. Maybe a PM colo coop? No idea what that might cost or what other risks might be involved. -- Peter Karman . peter at peknet.com . www.peknet.com From matt at omega.org Fri Aug 17 15:06:54 2007 From: matt at omega.org (Matthew Johnson) Date: Fri, 17 Aug 2007 17:06:54 -0500 Subject: [Mpls-pm] $25 HR Conference Room Rental NEXT TO LIGHT RAIL Minneapolis Message-ID: http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/off/399326988.html From ian at indecorous.com Fri Aug 24 15:25:25 2007 From: ian at indecorous.com (Ian Malpass) Date: Fri, 24 Aug 2007 17:25:25 -0500 Subject: [Mpls-pm] Possible future talks Message-ID: <46CF5AD5.4060604@indecorous.com> We have a technical meeting scheduled for 12 September at Tech Pro. We have some possible speakers lined up already, but I thought I'd see if anyone had any other ideas or preferences too. Currently, from the wiki and from communications past, we have the following titles: * Into to Moose[0][1] * Case study: applying OOP to existing scripts[2] * Intro to POD[3] * Intro to GD/custom charting with GD[3] * Making sweet(ish) music with MIDI[3] * A walkthrough of a Catalyst tutorial * Sending mail with CPAN modules * Filtering email with Email::Filter * Intro to Haskell * Intro to Ruby * Intro to Ruby on Rails Those marked as such have volunteer speakers. The rest are just ideas/suggestions looking for volunteers. If anything on the list catches your eye, or if you have any requests (even if you don't want to deliver the talk yourself), do pipe up.
