I see 10.3.3 just came out earlier this week, so if you run the software update, it will probably be a big install. By the way, osx comes with perl (mine is 5.8.1). I also use fink for a package manager ( http://fink.sourceforge.net/ ). It includes a bunch of standard utilities and also dpkg if you like the debian way of installing. Now that I think about it, you probably already use fink. Anyway, it will be cool to drool over at one of the upcoming meetings On Mar 18, 2004, at 9:25 PM, Ken Williams wrote: > > On Mar 11, 2004, at 12:35 AM, Matthew Johnson wrote: >> material_trappings_of_life::new_powerbook_ken > > > Yeah, so I bought it. What am I missing? Maybe you're thinking of UTF16? According to http://www.unicode.org/standard/principles.html : ------------ UTF-8 is a way of transforming all Unicode characters into a variable length encoding of bytes. It has the advantages that the Unicode characters corresponding to the familiar ASCII set have the same byte values as ASCII, and that Unicode characters transformed into UTF-8 can be used with much existing software without extensive software rewrites.?? ------------ The key phrase is "variable length". Some characters, in particular the ASCII set, are still 8 bits long. Try adding some fahrfergn?gen/fianc?e words and see what happens. -Ken -------------------------------------------------- Minneapolis Perl Mongers mailing list To unsubscribe, send mail to majordomo@pm.org with "unsubscribe mpls" in the body of the message.
