Bad employers? Did anyone respond to this? Anyway, the tech sector probably isn't any worse than elsewhere. However, there's not a lot of Perl/Unix stuff, especially as a percentage of available tech work. Many of the local employers are insurance companies, banks, etc. which seem to be MS shops. There are certainly places that do use Perl, but we don't see a lot of Perl jobs postings come through this list. You could check out jobs.perl.org and see if you can find any Minnesota listings. I work as a consultant and most of my current (and past) clients have been out-of-town. One employer I know that uses Perl is the local Reuters branch which used to be Bridge, before Reuters bought them. They use Perl for processing lots of financial data feeds. I interviewed there and they seemed nice, but they have a draconian IP contract that claims ownership of _any_ creative work you do at _any_ time while employed there, so I couldn't even consider working there. One employer that at one time used Perl, and still may, but which I wouldn't recommend is Digital River. I have no idea if they still use Perl, or are still run by a bunch of nitwits, as I left a couple years back, so take this with appropriate amounts of salt. -dave /*======================= House Absolute Consulting www.houseabsolute.com =======================*/ -------------------------------------------------- Minneapolis Perl Mongers mailing list To unsubscribe, send mail to majordomo@pm.org with "unsubscribe mpls" in the body of the message. It's been a while since I posted (and even longer since I've attended a meeting). I work at the aforementioned Reuters office. In our defense, we also thought that the IP contract was too inclusive as well, and didn't proceed to the step of negotiating with the lawyers so that it was more reasonable. So it might not be that bad. This holiday message actually comes at a good time, because it looks like our office is about to take on more responsibility within Reuters, and we'll be needing help to get it done. This help will have to start as consultants, although if we succeed we anticipate being able to offer permanent employment at the end of the contract (end of year timeframe). There may be some permanent positions to start with as well, but I can't tell you how many at this time. We're a small (30 people) development office for a large (12,000 employees) global company (http://www.reuters.com/) working on backend financial data processes. We use Perl heavily throughout our data collection, parsing, and distribution processes. We run Sybase for our database and most servers are Sun Solaris boxes. Experience is important, but we will hire junior people too if you're a good match for us. Unix, Perl and SQL are the most important skills, with mod_perl/Mason, C, HTML, and bond knowledge extremely helpful. If you have questions or are interested, please drop me a line so I can send more information when I get it. Brief qualifications/links are welcome, but don't worry about resumes yet. So it might not be that bad. I also have even more than the usual concerns since I develop a number of free software projects and am an author, so there's no way I could sign something that would potentially give away rights to those things. Times article by Jia-Rui Chong about JPL workers' wristwatches keeping Martian time prompted me to do a little bit of research about time zones on Mars. I'll eventually propose a patch to the "Theory" file, but thought I'd first submit the following rough draft on this mailing list for comment. ----- Time and time zones on Mars ----- Some people have adjusted their work schedules to fit Mars time. Dozens of special Mars watches were built for Jet Propulsion Laboratory workers who kept Mars time during the Mars Exploration Rovers mission (2004). These timepieces look like normal Seikos and Citizens but use Mars seconds rather than terrestrial seconds. A Mars solar day is called a "sol" and has a mean period equal to about 24 hours 39 minutes 35.244 seconds in terrestrial time. It is divided into a conventional 24-hour clock, so each Mars second equals about 1.02749125 terrestrial seconds. The prime meridian of Mars goes through the center of the crater Airy-0, named in honor of the British astronomer who built the Greenwich telescope that defines Earth's prime meridian. Mean solar time on the Mars prime meridian is called Mars Coordinated Time (MTC). Each landed mission on Mars has adopted a different reference for solar time keeping, so there is no real standard for Mars time zones. For example, the Mars Exploration Rovers mission defined two time zones "Local Solar Time A" and "Local Solar Time B" for its two missions, each zone designed so that its time equals local true solar time at approximately the middle of the nominal mission. Such a "time zone" is not particularly suited for any application other than the mission itself. Many calendars have been proposed for Mars, but none have achieved wide acceptance. Astronomers often use Mars Sol Date (MSD) which is a sequential count of Mars solar days elapsed since about 1873-12-29 12:00 GMT. The tz database does not currently support Mars time, but it is documented here in the hopes that support will be added eventually.
