The Perl Survey is an attempt to capture a picture of the Perl community in all its diversity. No matter what sort of Perl programmer you are, we'd love to hear from you. The survey can be found at: http://perlsurvey.org/ It only takes about 5 minutes to complete. The survey will be open until September 30th, 2007. After that, we'll be reporting on the results and making the data freely available. Please feel free to forward this email to any other Perl programmers you know. I look forward to seeing the regulars, the recent newcomers, and hopefully a few of you who haven't been before. As usual, we'll meet in Wetherspoon's near the railway station (not the one in the snow dome). I'll show up around 8pm, but feel free to arrive whenever suits you: http://miltonkeynes.openguides.org/?J.D_Wetherspoon%2C_Central_Milton_Keynes If you've not been along before and you would like my mobile number to help find us please ask off list. Don't worry how much you know about Perl or Linux: we have quite a varied range of interests and abilities. I've tried to persuade a couple of local Python programmers to come along this time, so we'll see how that goes. Peter, thanks for the reminder. But why blue? Talking about reminders, finally I found sometime to create a google calendar for these meetings, and possibly other events: iCal: http://www.google.com/calendar/ical/e6lcqeedjhkmvvlkkqe096a7mg%40group.calendar.google.com/public/basic.ics HTML: http://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=e6lcqeedjhkmvvlkkqe096a7mg%40group.calendar.google.com If you want to embed it to your site, you can use this to generate html for you: http://www.google.com/calendar/embed/EmbedHelper_en.html?src=e6lcqeedjhkmvvlkkqe096a7mg%40group.calendar.google.com I will try my best to maintain it, but any extra volunteers are always welcome :) Hopefully, see you there. --Ziya From tom at eborcom.com Tue Sep 25 08:53:14 2007 From: tom at eborcom.com (Tom Hukins) Date: Tue, 25 Sep 2007 16:53:14 +0100 Subject: Meeting: Tuesday 25th September 2007 In-Reply-To: <7e7471f80709211349k4e593ebne3a253c4b4ae21d1@mail.gmail.com> References: <20070921081140.GA7562@eborcom.com> <7e7471f80709211349k4e593ebne3a253c4b4ae21d1@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: <20070925155314.GA64978@eborcom.com> On Fri, Sep 21, 2007 at 09:49:53PM +0100, Ziya Suzen wrote: > Talking about reminders, finally I found sometime to create a google > calendar for these meetings, and possibly other events: Thanks, Ziya. I'm pleased you got round to this: it means we now have something that doesn't rely on me updating it, which I strongly approve of. :) I notice it lists us as meeting on Christmas, though, which we traditionally avoid. (There might have been talk of an alternative date, but I forget). > I will try my best to maintain it, but any extra volunteers are always > welcome :) Feel free to add me: I'll remove the Christmas meeting. I encourage everyone else to help maintain this. This means anyone can schedule meetings according to their whims, announce them on the mailing list and IRC and add them to the calendar. One day I'll get the Web page in Subversion or something useful like that. I am trying to get a recent version of perl (5.8.8) installed on production machines which exist in a highly restricted environment. I can instll the modules directly on production because I am not allowed to have any development tools available. So, I build perl with all the modules I want on a development box (400 in all), tar the installation up and get the tarball into production and untar it there. The problem is that the procedures require me to run tests on all of the modules I've introduced on the production box where make and gcc don't exist. Ideally, I'd like to use the test suites that come with each module but I can't use "make test" without make. There is "prove" , but not all of the module distributions have a "t" subdirectory - they have a test.pl script instead. I've played with the CPAN module but I can't find a way to use it without access to make. Any idea anyone ? Cheers Tony This communication is for informational purposes only. Depends on the module. Some modules require native bindings hence they require a cc. Some modules require make for build action. Recent modules on the other hand usually use Module::Build, a pure Perl build system. However, unless you are only one or two modules short, you probably won't be able to get away without using a c compiler. There are quite a few very useful modules with existing library bindings you might like to use. > I am trying to get a recent version of perl (5.8.8) installed on production > machines which exist in a highly restricted environment. > I can instll the modules directly on production because I am not allowed to > have any development tools available. For deployment I recommend using a packaging system (rpm, deb etc.) Many CPAN modules has packages for target systems. > So, I build perl with all the modules I want on a development box (400 in > all), tar the installation up and get the tarball into production and untar > it there. > The problem is that the procedures require me to run tests on all of the > modules I've introduced on the production box where make and gcc don't > exist. > Ideally, I'd like to use the test suites that come with each module but I > can't use "make test" without make. > There is "prove" , but not all of the module distributions have a "t" > subdirectory - they have a test.pl script instead. > I've played with the CPAN module but I can't find a way to use it without > access to make. I am a bit confused at this point. But it sounds like you need a development and test environment similar (ideally identical) to your production systems. And if your sys admins are so strict you should start looking into releasing system packages (RPMs for example) for deployment. -ziya
