From I.A.Cameron at open.ac.uk Mon Aug 21 10:36:42 2006 From: I.A.Cameron at open.ac.uk (Ian Cameron) Date: Mon, 21 Aug 2006 18:36:42 +0100 Subject: Wireless access in Milton Keynes Message-ID: Excuse the cross posting, but I thought this might be of interest to both lists... There was a story a while back regarding the central part of Milton Keynes, stretching from Midsummer Place to the train station having free wireless access points installed and operational by 1st August 2006. I tried to see if it was going during the the MKLUG second Wednesday of the month meeting in Wetherspoon's, but couldn't seem to find an access point from the inside. Does anyone know if it is live yet? Stories like this popped up regarding this network: http://www.silicon.com/research/specialreports/travel/0,3800011481,39159131,00.htm On another note, it looks like MK is set to get WiMax access too, which should apparently be operational in about a month, although I doubt this will be free access :-( http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/08/21/pipex_miltonkeynes_wimax_wireless/ -- Cheers, Ian. I suppose you'll be herding your flock of computers onto the drover trail to Cambridge? Anyway, it will be good to see you at YAPC::EU. I see that MKPM are now up to 4 attendees, better than Paris.pm but not as good as Copenhagen.pm (is there something strangely perl-inducing in Danish water?) http://www.birmingham2006.com/cgi-bin/yapc.pl?act=user-stats Regards, Peter Dragonstaff Limited http://www.dragonstaff.com Business IT Consultancy -----Original Message----- From: miltonkeynes-pm-bounces+peter=dragonstaff.com at pm.org [mailto:miltonkeynes-pm-bounces+peter=dragonstaff.com at pm.org] On Behalf Of michael Sent: 22 August 2006 08:35 To: miltonkeynes-pm at pm.org Subject: Re: Wireless access in Milton Keynes On Mon, 21 Aug 2006, Ian Cameron wrote: > There was a story a while back regarding the central part of Milton Keynes, > stretching from Midsummer Place to the train station having free wireless > access points installed and operational by 1st August 2006. > [Grump] Just as I'm leaving Milton Keynes it starts to get interesting [/Grump] Last Friday we finally got a completion date... next Friday This a good thing as it means I can go to YAPC! Let's skip over the fact that we're the closest group to Birmingham.. All this brings me nicely onto mentioning that although next Tuesday is the last of the month, I won't organise a meeting as I'll be in Birmingham (along with the other 3). But if the rest of you want to meet up anyway, go for it. We'll resume our regular schedule in September. Also, I have a technical meeting vaguely pencilled in my head, figuratively, for early October. This conveniently coincides with our first birthday. What would everyone like to hear about? Would you like us to tell you what we learn at YAPC? Which attendees should we get drunk and persuade into guest speaking? Or would you like to tell us about something you've done? I already have a special list of volunteer victims, but I won't object to more. Those of you who haven't registered for YAPC: Just think about all the lovely Balti you'll miss out on. There's still time to register. We'll probably augment that with some talks from people who've used Amazon Web Services to create cool stuff. The snag, of course, is that it's a weekend so, in order to gauge interest I ask you to add your name to http://london.pm.org/aws/ And we'll see if we can muster enough people for either Saturday or Sunday. This is open to anyone, not just London.pm so please pass far and wide. Thanks, Simon ----- End forwarded message -----
