That's odd, I use that too, not sure if I've built brace on it yet though.
Perhaps you don't have all the X headers installed.  There is a debian/control
file there which mentions the packages you need.  I'll get back to you.

I can use existing CSV libraries for C with brace too, but I don't know how
well they'll perform.
