Yeah - I wasn't sure that it was so simple, either - hence the minimal
Inline::C test script.
After posting, I took a look at the documentation for $! and %! 'perldoc
perlvar'. The "approved" method for finding out which values are valid for
$! on your perl, according to that documentation, is to look at the keys for
%!. Take a look at that documentation if you're not familiar with it.
