Richard Stallman will be giving a talk on Oct. 8, on "The Danger of
Software Patents".

12:00pm, Friday, 8 October, 2004
Lecture Theater 1, ICT Building, 111, Barry Street,
Dept. of Computer Science and Software Engineering,
The University of Melbourne

Dr Stallman <http://www.stallman.org/> is:

- the famous programmer of much of the software in the GNU/Linux
   operating system <http://www.gnu.org/gnu/linux-and-gnu.html>,

- the founder of the Free Software Foundation
     <http://www.gnu.org/fsf/fsf.html>, and

- author of the GPL licence
     <http://www.gnu.org/licenses/licenses.html>.

While the GPL and its 'copyleft' principle became a model for later
'Open Source' software licences now in wide use, the original emphasizes
the importance of preserving with the work a number of important
freedoms to use the work, rather than merely requiring open access to
the source code.

In this talk Richard Stallman discusses how software patents restrict
the development of software, so that every design decision potentially
brings the developer or programmer a risk of getting sued.

There is limited seating. Please turn up early.
