I'd suggest getting them to read this chapter:

If they already know the absolute basics, then just the 'Branching'
section of that chapter might be enough.
The whole chapter takes ~3 hours to get through. You could set up a
sample CVS sandbox for people to play with while try the commands for
themselves.
