question on perl

I'd suggest reading the fine documentation provided with perl or available
online.  I think there're some FMTYEWTK tutorials that go into depth
on the topic, and I've found that the O'Reilly _Advanced Perl Programming_
has a very clear description of it all, if you prefer hardcopy.
