As apparently no one came forward to be the main coordinator, I'll try
to do that.

As you could see from the previosly forwarded message the
submission dead-line is close. Please submit your talk proposals ASAP.
If you ask what to talk about then think about problems - outside of
the Perl world - that are being solved with Perl. Those things can be
good subjects for a talk.

I'll get in touch with the organizers to see how we could get a Perl booth.

I'll also submit a talk myself.

I spoke with one of the organizers (the one in charge of non-profit
booths, I think).  He said to drop him a line if you/we want a Perl
Mongers booth: gareth at socallinuxexpo.org.  Feel free to tell him I
sent you.

If a Perl Mongers booth is arranged, I'll be happy to help man it.  I
plan to attend SCALE anyway, and in past years I haven't attended too
many of the sessions.

Howdy folks.

I could've sworn that I'd seen a Perl Mongers presence every year since i've
been going but it appears there wasn't one last year. They were there 2
years ago under SoCal Perl Mongers:

So maybe the larger SoCal PM group has needed things for the booth (namely,
a banner). Also, if the offer is extended to those groups in SD, OC &
Thousand Oaks, we'd have a larger pool to draw from for booth volunteers.

I can't commit to help out in the booth just yet as I'm not sure if I'll
volunteer for SCALE itself, LA.PM, LAMPSIG or LA Drupal but like last year,
LA Drupal will probably win out. Either way, I'll be there so if someone
needs a break, I can help out.

Thanks, actually in the meantime I also found him IRC and just sent him the
e-mail request. I also CC-ed Juan J. Natera as he also volunteered to
get this done and it is better to have a local contact person than one
10 hours off the timezone.

Hi,

some of you might have already read about the initiative of
Renee Baecker and myself called Perl Ecosystem Group[1].

In short, we are trying to engage the companies using Perl,
understanding what they are missing from the Perl world,
(so far it was mostly more developers), raising money from them,
promoting Perl and channeling some funds to the Perl community.

I am thinking of actually coming to SCALE in February and submitting
a talk there. I have about 2 days left to do that.
While just visiting LA and SCALE might be nice in order to really justify the
time and expense I'd like to use this opportunity to visit the "near-by"[2]
cities with Perl Mongers and to introduce PEG to both the Perl Mongers
and to companies using Perl.

I'll need your help in this to

1) introduce the Perl Ecosystem Group and the TPF events group
? to the local Perl Mongers (e.g. having an regular meeting) where,
? along the other presentations I could talk a few minutes about
? the initiative.

? That would provide an opportunity for people to discuss what we are
? trying to do and see how that can work with the local Perl Mongers.

2) Have meetings at a few Perl using companies in the area.
? ?I had such meeting in Vienna last April and two of the companies I
? ?met there are already member of PEG. Others remained interested.
? ?I think it is important to have such face to face meetings.

The former can be at any non-formal place such as you usual meeting
place or at a pub or whatever you like.

For the latter I'd need your help in building up contacts with managers
(e.g. CTOs, VP RnDs ) of the companies where you work. I'd be glad to
accept any help there.

Please send me e-mail on or off list regarding which companies you
might be able to get me introduced.
