I love my car -- trains in LA are a joke, but in this case you are actually in luck:

Metrolink to Union Station,

I've ridden both these and they are very comfortable.  The walk from either the del Mar or Union St station in Pasadena to the restaurant is about 4 blocks.

If you can get to a metro stop without too much pain, and if Pasadena is 
the location (which it's not clear we've actually decided), you might be 
better off to take that option.  The Gold Line comes to within a couple 
blocks of the restaurants I mentioned.  Unfortunately, I don't think 
there's a stop anywhere all that close to Irvine :-(.
