From magog at the-wire.com Tue Oct 10 19:49:43 2006 From: magog at the-wire.com (Michael Graham) Date: Tue, 10 Oct 2006 22:49:43 -0400 Subject: [kw-pm] Andy Lester Oct 26 Talk Details Message-ID: <20061010224943.23e8c9eb@caliope> (These details are also on the TPM web site: http://to.pm.org/) Speaker: Andy Lester Date: Thursday 26 Oct 2006 Time: 6:45pm Where: 2 Bloor Street West (NW corner of Yonge/Bloor, skyscraper with the CIBC logo on top) Floor/Classroom TBA =================================================================== Talk Details: Andy Lester has used Perl for over a decade, has written or maintains a number of modules you probably use every day, and works on public relations for the Perl Foundation. But for his double-header talk for October 26th, Perl is barely a mention. First up, Andy will speak on technical debt and how to get out of it. Technical debt is that nasty condition companies get into where the codebase is crufty, poorly documented, and hard to test, and everyone is terrified of changing anything. Just like financial debt, it's the compound interest on technical debt that snowballs until you can no longer effectively do projects: technical bankruptcy. Come learn how to pay down your biggest debts before that happens. Second, Andy discusses pragmatic job hunting for technical people. He'll talk about how finding and landing a job isn't a matter of luck, and how to make yourself stand out in a sea of job applicants. Come ready to unlearn the conventional wisdom about all aspects of the job hunt, from where to find jobs, how to write a resume, and what to do in an interview. "In my years of hiring programmers, I've seen some pretty awful mistakes, and some awfully funny ones," he says. Come learn how to avoid the mistakes and get the job you want. This evening of talks is of general interest to programmers, sysadmins and other technical people, not just Perl Mongers. Tell your friends! =================================================================== Note: The elevators in the building are "locked down" after 5:30pm to people without building access cards. Leading up to the meeting someone will come down to the main floor lobby every few minutes to ferry people upstairs. There will be a number of scheduled trips: 17:30 18:00 18:30 18:45 19:00 After 19:00, you can reach the access-card-carrying guy via a cell phone number that we'll leave with security in the front lobby. The room and floor numbers will be left with security too. If any latecomers call up there will be a final group elevator run at 19:10. After that, access will be ad-hoc; call up from security and somebody will try to come down and let you up. -- Michael Graham From eric at uc.org Tue Oct 17 10:26:53 2006 From: eric at uc.org (fishbot) Date: Tue, 17 Oct 2006 13:26:53 -0400 (EDT) Subject: [kw-pm] October Meeting is this Thursday Message-ID: It's that time again: our monthly meeting is at 7pm this Thursday, October 19th, at our normal location. Agenda ====== Two shorter talks this month, with the theme "Beyond Perl": -> XS is EAsY presenter: fishbot XS is a meta-language for mapping C/C++ functions to Perl subroutines. Despite the relative complexity of Perl internals, getting XS to do basic things is pretty... basic. -> OCaml Intro presenter: abez abez gives an intro talk to OCaml. You thought that there was only one multi-paradigmic language with a link to Camels? Pizza: ====== As usual, add your name to the list if you want pizza: http://kw.pm.org/wiki/index.cgi?PizzaList so I know how much to buy. I'm happy to get a vegetarian pizza, but I won't unless asked. As usual, social follows. Looking forward to seeing everyone then. fishbot From daniel at coder.com Thu Oct 19 19:39:42 2006 From: daniel at coder.com (Daniel R. For anyone interested in /Going Beyond Perl: XS is EaSY and an Intro to OCaml/ who couldn't make the meeting, there will be slides on kw.pm.org. (I can say that definitively, because I have fish's slides, and I think I can get abez's too. So there.) Thanks, also to Anonymous++ for the pizza. :) -Daniel From abez at abez.ca Thu Oct 19 20:02:39 2006 From: abez at abez.ca (abez) Date: Thu, 19 Oct 2006 23:02:39 -0400 (EDT) Subject: [kw-pm] Thanks Eric and Abram!
