So far it is Richard Dice and myself heading down (both of us are from Toronto PM), but there is room for more (I've got a minivan with loads of space). We are heading down a bit early, and heading home a bit late, so that we can partake in some of the hack-a-thons that are planned around the conference. The plan so far is to leave late Friday night on the 23rd, and to head back Friday afternoon on the 30th. Richard and I will be getting together with some of the guys from the CGI::Application mailing list / IRC channel to hack on some code before the conference (if anyone is interested feel free to come along to that), and we are staying around for the pugs hack-a-ton after the conference. Even if you are only interested in a one way trip (either there or back), let me know. Cheers, Cees Hek On 6/1/06, Joshua McAdams wrote: > Hi there fellow Perl Mongers. Interesting content, both for the talk and the discussion about what people like and also don't like about the changes in perl6. Lots of both. Though, more exposure may change my opinions about some things (say, the ~ operator, and the new -> which just seems weird to me now). No doubt, perl5 will continue strong (either standalone or as perl6 emulation). And who knows what weirdnesses people will come up with that will be possible only in p6. Since it was billed as a topic with no slides, we have no slides for the website, but I expect we can probably put up fish's perl6 code. Reading a bit at a time is pretty obscure, at least in Perl-land. I didn't read the file a bit at a time, I actually pulled it in several kbytes at a time, then iterated over the bits with vec(), like so: for ( 0 .. $bits ) { $treeloc = vec( $buff, $_, 1 ) ? $treeloc->{Left} : $treeloc->{Right}; if ( $treeloc->{Term} ) { print $fhout $treeloc->{Char}; $treeloc = $htree; } } Where $buff was my filebuffer, and the rest is fairly self-documenting-ish. vec() is quite efficient, but looping over the bits in a multi-mbyte file is pushing perl's limits. If you are looking to handle something other than text IO in Perl, you likely need pack(), unpack() or vec(), or some combination thereof. Though ultra-powerful, they are also the posterchildren for obscure low level. fishbot ---- original message : 2006-06-17 2:18pm : lloyd carr ---- As usual I am happily distracted from doing anything useful by one of fishbot's talks :) How do you read a file one bit at a time? That's always fun to diagnose. Ensure that you are running the script from the command line as the same user and in the same directory as what the web server is. If need be, redirect stderr to a file in the script and examine the file. Obviously something has changed, you just don't know what yet. Have any system upgrades happened (automatic updates are the work of the devil) recently, does the problem go away if the web server's restarted... lots of things to investigate. -A. So, this is saying the cgi file is not in document root I assume? The httpd.conf is setup (as far as I can tell by looking at it) to run cgi file within each virtual domains cgi-bin directory, which is where the file currently is. I copied it over to /var/www/cgi-bin as well, just to see if it works. Still giving the same error. The thing I mostly don't understand is how this was working so well for so long and then suddenly just stopped. Must have been an update to apache or something that was recently done... probably just have something in the httpd.conf configured wrong. Either that or plesk (yes, they insist on having a control panel) has done something stupid.. which wouldn't be the first time I've seen a system running plesk mess something up seemingly on its own. Message-ID: <44972C2E.6030201@pobox.com> Hi everyone, By random fortune (and a flurry of last minute, behind-the-scenes emails), I have something special to announce. Damian Conway will be back in Toronto again this summer... in only 2 weeks! Damian has visited Toronto in the summers of each of 2001, 2002 and 2004, and they're always high points in Perl culture in the city. His talks are highly informative and highly entertaining. (Wednesday's talk will be especially weighted to entertaining.) This summer we have 3 events planned. //////////////////////////////////////////////// What: Perl 6 Update When: Monday July 3 (Canada Day stat holiday) 1:00 - 5:00 pm Where: 2 Bloor Street West (CIBC Tower, our usual TPM meeting spot), which is at the corner of Yonge & Bloor in downtown Toronto Room # and Floor # as yet to be determined. More details later. Note that building access could be tightly controlled, as will elevator access, so we'll have to work according to a system of pre-planned pick-up times as well as phone calls up via cellphone to get the ferryman to pick you up. Other: Dinner & beer follows, 5:30 pm - ?? Location: as yet unknown... we'll just pick a place in the neighbourhood to go following the talk. //////////////////////////////////////////////// What: Toronto BarCamp DemoCamp Damian will give a 15 minute demonstration of the Perl 6 language (That's right -- Perl 6, now!) (4 other presenters each have a chunk of time there too) When: Tuesday July 4 6:30 - 8:00 pm Where: see more/full details at: http://barcamp.org/TorCampDemoCamp7 //////////////////////////////////////////////// What: "Fun With Dead Languages" http://damian.conway.org/Seminars//DeadLanguages.html When: Wednesday July 5 6:30 - 9:00 pm Where: Not yet fully determined, likely somewhere at U. of Toronto Bahen Centre... but details to follow as they are finalized. Watch in mesmerized terror as Damian hacks code in five unrelated languages (none of them Perl). Along the way, you'll also learn about modern archaeological techniques, bidirectional cross- dressing, Ancient Greeks hackers, improbable romances, the real Club Med, why programmers shouldn't frequent casinos, the language of moisture vaporators, C++ mysticism, conversational Latin, state machines on steroids, feeding the dog the old-fashioned way, the shocking truth about anime, programming without variables or subroutines, the Four Voids of the Apocalypse, Microsoft's new advertising campaign, what the Romans used instead of braces, drunken stonemasons, the ancient probabilistic wisdom of bodkins, how to kill a language with a single byte, and the price of fish. //////////////////////////////////////////////// Fundraising ----------- There are some costs associated with his trip here. (E.g. hotel, potentially a venue for Wed. night if a free one can't be secured.) I am taking up a collection to cover the costs. Any additional money raised will be given to Damian as an honorarium, in support of such an active Perl community member who has supported us so much whenever we use Perl. In fact, I aim for there to be such a surplus so that we can help Damian out while he tours North America this summer. If you can and would like to donate please email me. Please note that all of Damian's public talks are free and that he's committed to all of them, regardless of funds raised. All are encouraged to attend -- the more, the merrier! //////////////////////////////////////////////// About Damian ---------------- For those who don't know Damian, he's from Melbourne, Australian, a professor of Computer Science at Monash University who has taken a more-or-less indefinite leave of absence so that he can work on the Perl 6 effort. (He's Larry Wall's #2 man in the design of the Perl 6 language.) He's also an active contributor to Perl 5, authoring more CPAN modules than you can comfortably shake a stick at, some being ridiculous (Coy, Acme::Bleach) while others are profound (Parse::RecDescent, Regexp::Common, Text::Balanced). He's a regular speaker at Perl and other IT conferences around the world, and a crowd favourite. His Perl books: "Perl Best Practices" http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/perlbp/ "Object Oriented Perl" http://www.manning.com/conway/ ////////////////////////////////// Any questions, comments, etc. -- just email me! In-Reply-To: <44972C2E.6030201@pobox.com> References: <44972C2E.6030201@pobox.com> Message-ID: This is a talk I am definitely interested in, and as such, will definitely be attending (the 3rd). The same offer goes out to anyone who may wish to hitch a ride to TO with me as the last trip out that way -- first come, first served. I'll likely be driving to the Islington Subway station in Etobicoke, and just taking the subway downtown.. makes things easier. I am also considering the 5th, if at least one other person from KW goes (just so I know someone), but I won't be able ot give anyone a ride *to* TO on the 5th since I work out that way anyway, but will happily drive anyone who requires it a drive back.
