You might consider steering him toward one of the FPS or RPG game
modification communities. Level editing, etc. isn't too difficult. And you
get the bonus of being able to walk through your creation. Not to mention
that a lot of the games like Neverwinter Nights have not insignificant
scripting engines.

When I was a bit younger than your son, I was creating maps, etc. for some
adventure style text based RPGs on an Apple II+. Nobody gave me a nudge or
guidence, I just did it because it was fun. My brother at the same age could
sit at the computer with a copy of Byte magazine and type in assembler for
hours just to play a game someone else had written.

If you can steer him toward something he's honestly interested in, then
hopefully, his own intrinsic motivation and drive to accomplish moderately
difficult tasks should guide him down the path into the tiny little
details...
