Ruby

Larry

|
|I have to avoid wheat, eggs, seafood, and tomatoes.
|
|A little bit of any of them is probably okay, as long as I don't have a
|lot of any of them. So, for instance, the amount of wheat in the soy
|sauce is unlikely to bother me. But I shouldn't eat noodles that have
|wheat flour in them. (Rice and rice noodles are fine, of course. I
|usually avoid soba, because you can't tell just by looking whether they
|have wheat in them or not.) I can often get away with eating miso soup,
|even though it's based on fish broth. And miso soup is worth the
|risk--for me, eating miso soup is a bit like an ordinary person eating
|fugu. :-)
|
|Sometimes I'll risk a few shrimp. But only when it doesn't matter if I
|have to take an antihisamine and sleep for the next 12 hours.
|
|Eggs mostly show up in tempura batter, but I avoid that anyway because of
|the wheat.
|
|The most difficult thing to avoid is actually the wheat, because it sneaks
|into all kinds of things. In America, when I order rice at a restaurant,
|I have to ask whether it's really Rice-a-Roni, which is a mixture of
|rice and pasta.
|
|Fortunately, rice, vegetables, and any kind of meat other than seafood
|are fine.
|
|I hope that someday soon science will discover how to turn off allergies.
|Then I could move to Japan and eat tempura and sashimi all day long.
