Which do you take with you? Fortunately this is a choice Perl programmers haven't needed to make since O'Reilly released the first "Perl CD Bookshelf" in 1999. Now, with the just-released "Perl CD Bookshelf, Version 2.0," Perl programmers have an up-to-date, exhaustive Perl reference library that's completely portable, so being without a favorite Perl reference is not a situation they're likely to face. Perl programmers increasingly rely on the Web, online help, and online information sources for solutions to complex problems. The second edition of O'Reilly's "Perl CD Bookshelf" provides convenient online access to updates of favorite Perl books on a single CD. This essential library features a master index for all five bestselling Perl books--with text extensively hyperlinked--and a powerful search engine, so sought-after information can be quickly located. Packaged with a hard copy of "Perl in a Nutshell," the entire library takes up less than two inches of bookshelf space, but programmers on the move can just grab the CD and go. Formatted in HTML, "The Perl CD Bookshelf, Version 2.0" can be read by any browser. The CD-ROM contains the complete, unabridged versions of: --"Perl in a Nutshell" http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/perlnut/ --"Programming Perl, 3rd Edition" http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/pperl3/ --"Perl Cookbook" http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/cookbook/ --"Advanced Perl Programming" http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/advperl/ --"Perl for System Administration" http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/perlsysadm/ The five books, when purchased separately, would retail for $189.75, but "The Perl CD Bookshelf, Version 2.0" retails for only $79.95. What the readers and critics said about the first edition: "This CD is a very handy collection of a number of well-known O'Reilly Perl books. If you work on Perl-related stuff on various sites, a CD with the content of 6 books is much easier on your back to carry around with you. If you're a programmer who works on different client sites, this is great replacement for a stack of good Perl books. For a reasonable price, you get a truckload of information on a handy portable medium."--Arjen Laarhoven, slashdot.org, Dec 1999 "...an excellent set of resources within a small package...an outstanding compendium of techniques, procedures, facts, and basics for any level of Perl programmer...This is an extraordinary collection. If you use Perl, you need 'The Perl CD Bookshelf.'"--Elizabeth Zinkann, "SYS ADMIN," Nov 1999 "I really had doubts about whether this publication would be of any use. Those doubts disappeared when I saw the product and realized that the search features could save oodles of time. I also plan to make judicious use of browser bookmarks so I can remember the common places in books that I need to access frequently...The prospect of being able to emit complex CD searches in addition to a well-constructed handbook makes it worthwhile."--Peter Collinson, "EXE," November 1999 For more information about "The Perl CD Bookshelf, Version 2.0," see: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/perlcdbs2/ For a cover graphic in jpeg format, go to: ftp://ftp.ora.com/pub/graphics/book_covers/hi-res/0596001649.jpg The Perl CD Bookshelf, Version 2.0 By O'Reilly & Associates, Inc. 2nd Edition, May 2001 ISBN 0-596-00164-9, 672 pages, $79.95 (US) order@oreilly.com 1-800-998-9938 http://www.oreilly.com # # # O'Reilly is a registered trademark of O'Reilly & Associates, Inc. It'll change before Wednesday anyway. Last year, it > changed after Wednesday, too. oh, blooblah. here's what would be circled on my schedule if i were going: I: Wall, Secret, and then hell, all of the afternoons look excellent. i've probably heard Dominus before though, and i don't know if Abigail is as entertaining with datastrs as he is with obfuscation, so i'd probably try out the Super-Hot Inline.pm. II: Torkington is an easy call. maybe a break to catch the C/Java rubbish with Ingerson. Schwern is probably fun until he loses control of the audience, just in time for Abigail's JAPHi, which was my favorite talk of YAPC 19100. then join the Cult Of Conway. III. Dominus' Identity Function is a must-see if you haven't before. then take a nap or go throw vegetables at the php person until Torkington. then either the Lightnings (weren't nearly as cool as i hoped last year) or Brocard or maybe more Schwern. Perl 6 is the only cool-looking thing after that. then yee-haw, more Conway. damn, i'm highly jealous. the talks look even better than last years'. hopefully they'll be online. damn damn damn i shoulda tried harder to go. :( if Orwant and Ashton were presenting, i would probably go anyway and ask permission later. -- Steve Lane Jax.PM Moderator's Note: This message was posted to the Jacksonville Perl Monger's Group listserv. This is Simon Cozens, www.perl.com managing editor, bringing you the latest goings on from the world of Perl and our own site. *** Perl at large *** Well, as I write this, YAPC (Yet Another Perl Conference) is under 24 hours away. If you're getting ready to head off, this article may help. It contains directions from the airport to the McGill campus where the conference is being held: http://use.perl.org/article.pl?sid=01/06/012955&mode=nocomment The YAPC schedule is available, as is the schedule for Lightning Talks: http://www.yapc.org/America/talks.shmtl http://perl.plover.com/lt/yapc2001.html Away from the conferences, things have been happening with CPAN; the scripts index is back http://www.cpan.org/scripts/ and there are a bunch of mailing lists to inform you when new things get put onto the CPAN: http://theory5.uwinnipeg.ca/cgi-bin/cpan-update On the development front, I've moved the Perl repository browser -- a nifty little gadget that allows real-time access to Perl's version control system -- to ActiveState with help from Gurusamy Sarathy. You can now find it at: http://public.activestate.com/cgi-bin/perlbrowse Another real-time access method will be provided by the changes mailing list, which is being set up as I write. Send mail to perl5-changes-subscribe@perl.org to receive change reports as they happen. *** What's new on www.perl.com? *** Leon Brocard brings us the perl5-porters summary for the final time. Next week, I shall be returning to my summarizing duties: http://www.perl.com/pub/2001/06/p5pdigest/THISWEEK-20010611.html Once again, Bryan Warnock brings us his summary of the Perl 6 mailing lists: http://www.perl.com/pub/2001/06/p6pdigest/THISWEEK-20010611.html Parse::RecDescent is the topic of our feature article this week. As you probably know, Yet Another Society, via donations from the Perl community, has bought out Damian Conway's teaching commitments for the year so that he can work on cool Perl gadgetry for us. One of his most interesting pieces of gadgetry is Parse::RecDescent, a recursive-descent parser generator. This is a tremendous help to Perl programmers who need to deal with any sort of structured data; from configuration files to mail headers to ... well, basically anything. It's even been used to parse other programming languages for conversion to Perl, something that will be quite a major topic of TPC. However, it's not all that easy to get into unless you see some good examples and a good tutorial. But don't worry, Jeff Goff has it covered. He explains what Parse::RecDescent does, how to build up grammars, and how to use Parse::RecDescent in your programs. This is another of those articles I'm really glad to be able to present, because it's something that's been really needed; Parse::RecDescent is an extremely useful module, and more people need to know about it. http://www.perl.com/pub/2001/06/13/recdecent.html You'll remember that two weeks ago, Casey West gave us his views on how the Perl community does and should tolerate novice users of the language. This week, we also bring you a response to that article by Robert Kiesling. He argues that if there is a problem, it's more due to the nature of Perl than the nature of its programmers. http://www.perl.com/pub/2001/06/12/anti_begin.html Enjoy! Consequently, there has also emerged a need for a means by which to objectively measure these administrators' skills. Understandably, there is some controversy surrounding certification of Linux professionals; some fear that certification will give an edge in the job market to less experienced candidates who hold the appropriate certification over more experienced candidates who lack certification. While these fears are not unfounded, the benefits of a certification program would seem to far outweigh them if Linux is to continue to expand into the mainstream. "Over the last few years the status of Linux has changed significantly in the press and popular opinion," says Jeffrey Dean, author of "LPI Linux Certification in a Nutshell" (O'Reilly, US $39.95). "Once a niche solution at best, it's now a strategic technology for major corporations like IBM and Dell. It has also popularized Open Source and Free Software, and has the attention of Microsoft. I don't see this trend slowing anytime soon, so the need for qualified Linux administrators is likely to rise. The LPI program serves this growing market with an affordable, objective certification. This book prepares candidates with detailed information and examples." The LPI (Linux Professional Institute) certification program is one of a number of programs formed over the last few years to provide certification for Linux administrators. As Dean explains, each of the existing programs approaches the problem of certifying Linux administrators in a different way. While Dean's book covers the range of topics that will be useful to all system administrators who use Linux, his focus is on preparing for the LPI certification examination. Deans says, "The LPI is vendor-neutral and a not-for-profit organization, which make it unique in the Linux certification market. As for the future, as a certified professional myself, I hope the market fully embraces these skill sets." Dean's book is divided into two parts, one for each of the LPI Level 1 Exams (Level 1 is aimed at junior to mid-level Linux administrators). Each part features a summary of the exam, a highlighter's index, labs, suggested exercises, and practice exams. Part 1 covers the General Linux Exam 101, which mainly tests knowledge of facts, including commands and their common options, important file locations, configuration syntax, and common procedures. Part 1 includes the following: --GNU and Unix commands --Devices, Linux file systems, and the file system hierarchy standard --Boot, initialization, shutdown and run levels --Documentation --Administrative tasks --Hardware and architecture Part II of the book covers General Linux Exam 102, which tests a slightly broader range of administration skills, including basics such as PC architecture and Linux installation, GUI (X Windows) customization, and networking. Part II includes the following: --Linux installation and package management --The Linux kernel --Text editing, processing, and printing --Shells, scripting, programming, and compiling --X-Windows --Networking fundamentals --Network services --Security "LPI Linux Certification In a Nutshell" is designed to help system administrators prepare for the LPI certification exams, but even experienced Linux administrators can benefit from a full review of this material. The tutorial-style approach will help newbies learn more about their Linux systems. Dean adds, "This book makes no assumptions about Linux experience, and will be very effective for those coming from other computer systems such as Windows or mainframes." Jeffrey Dean is a Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE), freelance author, editor, and consultant with professional experience in IT management, training delivery, and system administration of the VMS, Unix, AS/400, and Windows NT operating systems. This year's YAPC had 4 total rooms, only one of them was that large. 2) Cheap lodging nearby. This is the killer - traditionally YAPC has used nearby dorms to get the price down to about $40/night. But it doesn't have to be a college - we can think outside the box, as long as it is relatively affordable for out of town guests. Sedayao launches into the challenges facing network administrators, including making sure that only the right people can access resources on the network, that the network will function even if parts fail or are configured incorrectly, and that company directives are enforced, such as using cheaper network paths whenever possible. "In short," Sedayao says, "while maintaining connectivity is important, you also need to implement security, robustness and business policies with your network." Although Cisco routers are used extensively both on the Internet and in corporate intranets, the Cisco Internet Operating System (IOS) has grown to be very large and complex, and Cisco documentation fills several volumes. In his new book, Sedayao focuses on access lists--one particular aspect of the Cisco IOS--with regard to three critical areas: intranets, firewalls, and the Internet. Unlike other Cisco router titles, "Cisco IOS Access Lists" focuses on practical instructions for setting router access policies rather than the details of interfaces and routing protocol settings. "It's unfortunate that the general policy mechanism for Cisco routers is known as an access list," Sedayao remarks. "The term 'access' connotes that access lists apply only to the area of security, while in fact access lists are used for a whole range of policies, not just for security concerns. I envision this book as a guide and reference for implementing network policies with access lists on Cisco routers." Sedayao presents a way to think about access lists and network policy, describes how access lists are built, and gives examples of how to apply those access lists in different situations. Although Sedayao's focus is on Internet Protocol (IP), network administrators will be able to apply to many of the same techniques with other network protocols as well. "Cisco IOS Access Lists" was written for network administrators and others who use Cisco routers to implement policies. It offers both experienced network administrators and those who are new to using Cisco routers a framework for thinking about network policies, and demonstrates how to use access lists to implement those policies. About the Author Jeff Sedayao manages Intel's Internet gateways by determining policies on security, access, and usage. Prior to this position, he was a software engineer at Intel. Besides. It's not a "real" meeting unless there were at least 3 of us there. I could get my friend from Philly to sign up, and we'll make it retroactive... > Many times they are meeting to talk ABOUT me ! :D Well, that's what Greg and I did, anyway. :) > PS - Forward any pictures - I'll set them up on the Jax.PM home page... None myself, but I think the collections are supposed to be linked from yapc.org or use.perl.org sometime soonish. For those who are curious, here are the sessions I went to. I will be happy to share more info about them if you ask. They also say there's going to be an effort to get post-conference proceedings published, since many of the slides weren't done in time for the first book. Wednesday: Damian Conway on Perl 6 (in place of Larry, who was sick) Nat Torkington free-form, eventually on idiomatic Perl Adam Turoff's Perl Apprenticeship "Hour" Abigail on Parse::RecDescent Thursday: Nat Torkington on Perl Internals Skud Robert and Shane Landrum on Reefknot Skud Robert and Shane Landrum on CGI::FormMagick Schwern on "Disciplined Programming, or How to be Lazy without Trying" Damian Conway on Life, the Universe, and Everything (during which he introduced modules for cell automata and programming Perl in Klingon.) Friday was mostly shorter sessions for me: MJD on Dirty Secrets of the Regex Engine MJD on the Identity Function Neil Kandalgaonkar on Programming Parrot Nat Torkington on "What's the Big Deal about P2P and Web Services?" Leon Brocard on Optimizing Compiler and Interpreter for a Toy Language Ranga Nathan on COBOL Explorer Clinton Pierce on Writing a Perl Book and the last few mintues of Lightning Talks Damian Conway and Nat Torkington on Perl 6 Status Meeting Damian Conway free-form for 30 minutes thanking us all (actual quote: "All my Damian are belong to you") Kevin Lenzo led the YAPC Town Meeting and we had a book auction at the end. I only saw Greg in a couple sessions. It's possible I wasn't paying attention to the audience, though. Maybe he'll take a few minutes and post which sessions he went to, and the rest of you who couldn't attend will have more information about the magic that is YAPC. j P.S. My brain is still full.
