Well, since I wasn't around the office yesterday afternoon (it only
took them 3 hours to decide that yes, this was a snow emergency) and
didn't feel like reading email from home, I didn't get to participate
in the discussion yesterday.

I appreciate Bill's attitude towards spam (it's uncannily similar to my
own), but I think moderation is overkill, and it creates work for Bill
where there really need be none. (Also, what would we do if he wanted to
take a vacation?)

If the list is served by majordomo (it's been awhile since I subscribed,
but I seem to recall it is), then there's a way to block non-members from
posting. The easiest way around this is because the signup process is
automated--majordomo is so common, it's not hard to imagine a filter on
the spammer's reply-to address that watches for the canned response and
subscribes to the list. If the default settings are still in place,
majordomo sends mail to Bill when there's a new subscription. Chances
are, attentive though he is, this isn't enough warning to stop a spammer.

I'll propose that we activate the members-only switch, as well as the
owner-must-approve-subscriptions one (not their real names). And then
let's get back to the business of not saying a damned thing, much less
actually talking about Perl! :)
