I know this is off topic for Perl, but I thought I'd throw it out anyway because learning functional methods and programming styles will make you a better Perl programmer. (How's that for a future talk topic, Wade? Not sure I can make the meeting this month, but maybe August...)

Last fall I was pretty excited about a free online OCaml class presented by the University Paris Diderot. If you missed out on that, they are offering the class again this fall. Classes start September 26, but registration for the course is open now.

I encourage you all to consider signing up. OCaml is a fast and fun language to learn, and it has a very practical approach to using strong types that is much more intuitive than the type systems you might be familiar with from Java or C#. OCaml byte code compiles into platform native executables on par with the speed of C++.

The course is six weeks long, all the course materials and videos are in English (even though it's based in France. :)

Cheers,

P.S. It's been a while since I plugged my group here, soooo if you're interested in FP, I run the Houston Functional Programming meetup. You can learn more here: http://www.meetup.com/Houston-Functional-Programmers/
