A couple of years ago, Perl enabled me to undertake an involved and otherwise-prohibitive transformation in the formatting of a large number of documents. Of course, the trade-off was many hours spent in learning Perl (from "square one") versus the countless hours which would have been required in tedious and error-prone manual labour and proofreading. Now I need to do something similar, but I haven't touched Perl since the previous project. I dread all the study which is going to be necessary, but without Perl I could not hope to undertake the project. So a refresher would be welcome. Remember that this mailing list is a good resource for answering any questions you might have. We also have the IRC channel we set up for the remote meetings at irc.perl.org/houston.pm. I also find the Perl Monastery (perlmonks.org) to be a great resource of knowledgeable Perl programmers. In the longer term, it sounds like there may be more interest that I had previously thought. One great way to learn any language is to work through a project or task that you would like to do in the language. Unfortunately, deciding how big a task to bite off can be hard. If you are looking to learn Perl and have a task in mind, maybe we could work through solving it either on the list or at a meeting (or both). Or about 1/3 of the entire catalog -- either way, for free, it aint bad in a pinch. -Will On Wed, Nov 11, 2009 at 5:22 PM, G. It might be useful to have people in different parts of Houston give Uri some ammunition to talk to his client. It couldn't hurt to have more Perl opportunities in Houston. G. Wade ------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Nov 2009 03:16:58 -0500 From: "Uri Guttman" To: pm_groups at pm.org Subject: [pm_groups] ISO location for perl/data center please forward this to your local list if you deem it appropriate. hello mongers, i have a client who has asked me an interesting question. they are in the discussion phase of opening a second data center for their hosting business. they are would like it to be west of the mississippi in the US but not california (too expensive) and east of there may work too. they are seeking a location where they could hire a small (maybe 3-6) staff of perl developers, but the number could grow over time. i am helping them with this search which is why i am bringing it to the pm groups. email me back if you think your area is a good fit for their needs. it should have an active perl community with hackers seeking work and decent rent and expenses for a data center. i already mentioned portland OR and boston. another area that works is seattle. what about your monger group's location? email me at uri at perlhunter.com with info about your perl monger group and such. thanx, uri -- Uri Guttman ------ uri at stemsystems.com -------- http://www.sysarch.com -- ----- Perl Code Review , Architecture, Development, Training, Support ------ --------- Gourmet Hot Cocoa Mix ---- http://bestfriendscocoa.com --------- -- Request pm.org Technical Support via support at pm.org -- C makes it easy to shoot yourself in the foot; C++ makes it harder, but when you do, it blows away your whole leg. -- Bjarne Stroustrup From toddr at cpanel.net Wed Nov 25 09:53:55 2009 From: toddr at cpanel.net (Todd Rinaldo) Date: Wed, 25 Nov 2009 11:53:55 -0600 Subject: [pm-h] use strict; Message-ID: <903A9C29-62E4-414D-8149-DBAD84AA7D43@cpanel.net> We heard a quote at this month's meeting: "I don't use strict, I just let it happen" Having worked with code that doesn't use strict, I found it very profound and funny. Wade Johnson) Date: Mon, 30 Nov 2009 19:57:11 -0600 Subject: [pm-h] December Meeting Message-ID: <20091130195711.610f149f@sovvan> Surprise. It looks like we will have a December social meeting after all. Last month I connected the Houston Perl Meetup to our meeting schedule, expecting it to schedule meetups when I told it to. Instead, the service automatically sent out reminders for this month as well. Since there has been some interest, I decided to go ahead and call for a social meeting next Tuesday (Dec. 8) at Fuddruckers on the SW Fwy near Weslayan. We normally don't have meetings in December because people have too much going on to prepare a presentation or plan something else for the meeting. But a social meeting should be pretty easy. I you'd like to come, we'd look forward to seeing you there. G. Wade -- Never express yourself more clearly than you think. -- Niels Bohr
