Keith's suggestion, and I think it's the best idea I've heard yet, is to have "Mom's" deliver. Their food is great. The minimum order requirement is easily met by a group our size. If everyone likes this idea, then we can scan in a copy of their menu and send it out. Orders would be collected (and acknowledged) the morning of the meeting. ITAR Section 120.17 (4) & 121.1 (8), 22 U.S.C. 2778 & 2779 classify any machine-readable form of strong RSA encryption as a "munition" subject to export restrictions. By that definition, one of my black T-shirts with a barcoded (Code 128) form of a 4-line Perl script that implements RSA encryption is, technically, a munition! So I've made sure to wear it whenever traveling outside the country. Despite the fact that it openly advertises "/WARNING THIS T-SHIRT IS A MUNITION/", so far no wild-eyed, foreign terrorists have torn it off my back. : ) +Joel === __________________________________________________ AdStream programs expose you to a stream of banner ads while you're connected to the Internet. I can have an agenda out by tomorrow - before I start, does anyone have anything they'd like to bring up? (Don't forget to bring your books in & swap!) Also -- I just got an e-mail that went out to all the .pm leadership folks, with an offer of employment. Figured I'd it over the list. I was wondering - Joel, do you know if we could set up two mailing lists? A "Discussion"-list with all kindsa stuff, and a "Announce" list with minutes, meeting announcments, and considerably less traffic? Would this better serve the needs of the membership? etc, etc, presidential-type statements ... I remain, Matthew R. Heusser Captain, Civil Air Patrol -> http://www.cap.af.mil President, Grand Rapids.PM -> http://grand-rapids.pm.org Hello: I'm looking for a Perl programmer to help us with automating our url submission service. We are on a shared server running Apache over Linux. Our clients' data will be submitted to 500 search engines, directories, free for all sites, etc. We would like this project to be programmed from an object oriented approach using the LWP library and mSQL (using DBI/DBD). This is going to be an end-to-end online service where the client receives an online report at completion and is able to submit multiple times per year or month. The online credit card transaction system is already in place as are the necessary modules. If you are experienced and available for this type of work, a more detailed description is below. Please return us a price quote and estimated time to completion. > features for clients using the system: - submission to over 500 search engines, directories, free for all pages, etc. using OOP (LWP, etc.). We would like there to be about 20 concurrent submissions to speed the process. - while the submission process is taking place, the search engines' confirmation/failure pages will be captured and appear/be replaced in 10 window frames in the browser. This gives the client visual proof of submissions taking place. - we will charge an initiation fee and then monthly recurrent billing based on 3 submissions per mo. - an interface for the client to change their contact/website/billing database info. - precautions should be taken so that a client cannot manipulate the system and make more submissions than allowed. - an automated email confirmation is sent to the client after the submission is completed, giving them the url of the submission report and the number of submissions they have left in the month. - clients should have the ability to cancel their service and stop the recurrent billing, but have the ability to reactivate their account later without re-entering their data or paying the initiation fee. > on-line credit card processing company we will be using: - iTransact. We have already been using them and you may alter as necessary. > features do you required for the site administrator / webmaster: - ability to modify/add/drop the search engine, directory, ffa submission sites. for example, a search engine may add a title field, or drop another, etc....ffa sites expire quite often and need to be replaced with new ones. we also may want to expand to 800 or 1000 sites at some point in the future. - since there will be more than one client using the system at once, use of muliple scripts and/or file locking routines will be necessary. - HIGHLY commented scripts describing what is happening and why with all aspects of the program. - ability to change the number of monthly submissions a client can make. - some of the major search engines are checking the http header data to make sure the submission is made by a browser, otherwise the submission will be rejected. Therefore, you would have to make sure either netscape or ie browser header data is sent to them (e.g., LWP:UserAgent has useful methods for this). > example of the report provided to our clients: http://www.gethits.com/reports/99/sept/Florio.html (no urls). We will need a contract price for this project. 15% will be held back until 60 days after the project goes live. We will retain all rights to the scripts. Our lawyer will draw up an agreement. The above is a preliminary description, but gives you a basic idea of what we are looking for. Schedule no technical issues, just get together for dinner somewhere in GR on a thursday night, toward the middle of the month? That way, we can all schedule our thinking efforts on other issues, like, say, Y2K madness ... So, that gives us technical sessions for October, November, and a meeting for December. It's also getting close to election time; how do you feel about nominations for the Presidency next month, then elections in November? Then we'll have an inaugeration in December or January ... just some post-meeting-ruminations, Matthew R. This basically means you get to help with picking the resturant, making the reservations, and picking who gets the 'greyish-white camel' awards for gr.pm. It might take as much as 20 minutes of your time. If you want to avoid being scribe next month, this would be one solution .... OK, someone suggested this sort of thing at the meeting on Friday, so I figured I'd get the ball rolling with a short one. Without running the program, figure out what it does. (BTW, actually running this might upset your sysadmins so don't.) Also, bonus points if you can explain the significance of it. Here it is: print g((sqrt(5) - 1) / 2); ssub g { $whatever++ > 9999999999999999999999999999999 ? $_[0] : 1 / (1 + g($_[0])); } I've got a feeling the guys from Square One Design might have an advantage on this one. +Joel ===== __________________________________________________ AdStream programs expose you to a stream of banner ads while you're connected to the Internet. I guess I should have said: On a system with unlimited resources, what would it print? > I recognize $_ as a special variable (but not what it's for). As for I figured that might obscure things a little, but that really wasn't my intent. I actually write real code like that occasionally. It's actually accessing the @_ array of subroutine parameters. Usually you'd see something like this: sub g { my ($param1) = @_; ... } I just shortened things and accessed the first parameter out of the special @_ array directly as $_[0]. > Thanks for the vote of confidence though! OK, a clue: Greeks might find it esthetically pleasing. +Joel ===== __________________________________________________ AdStream programs expose you to a stream of banner ads while you're connected to the Internet. Bzzzzzzztt! : ) (I always wanted to do that, sorry Matt. : ) ) Nice guess, but you're giving me way too much credit for actually trying to do something constructive. The key is to think about that number that's being passed to the "g" function and then think about what's happening inside of the g function. +Joel ===== __________________________________________________ AdStream programs expose you to a stream of banner ads while you're connected to the Internet. The first call value is already equal to the golden ratio, so > there isn't much convergence going on. Bingo. Good call Rob! (Actually, it converges on the golden ratio (approx .618) for most negative numbers too.) BTW, the obscenely large 9999...999 number was just to discourage people from running the code and encourage thinking about it. You can change that to 99 and actually run it if you like. The Golden Ratio is the one positive number that satisfies: X = 1 / (1 + X) (-1 / Golden_Ratio) satisfies it too. So, it's definition is recursive. It expands out like this: 1 / (1 + (1 / 1 + (1 / 1 + (1 / 1 + (...))))) The ratio between adjacent numbers in a Fibonocci sequence converges on the golden ratio. The Greeks believed it to be the most esthetically pleasing ratio of width to height. It pops up all over in nature (even your head dimensions). Designers dig it (or so I'm told). +Joel ===== __________________________________________________ AdStream programs expose you to a stream of banner ads while you're connected to the Internet. This may or may not be a Perl question but it sounded like something that could easily be done using a GIF file and Perl. I need to develop a way to take a scanned, line-art (black and white pixels only) image and generate cartesian coordinate data representing the pixels that are on or off. The data should take a form something like: (0,0)=0, (0,1)=1, etc. or something similar stored in an array(s). Simple right? Anyway, I don't currently have the book on graphics manipulation but we touched on it at the last meeting and this sounds feasible. If anyone knows how to do this, and it is simple enough to cover in an email, that would be great.
