Most users-even experienced developers and database administrators-find it difficult to get a handle on the full scope of the Oracle system. O'Reilly & Associates has just made it easier by releasing Oracle Essentials: Oracle8 & Oracle8i. Oracle Essentials provides an invaluable, all-in-one introduction to the full range of Oracle features and technologies. It distills the enormous amount of information about what Oracle is, where it came from, and what the latest releases do. Oracle Essentials explains what's new and important about Oracle's revolutionary releases, Oracle8 (the "object-relational database") and Oracle 8i (the "Internet database"). It covers Oracle products, overall architecture, data structures, and system management and tuning. It describes multiuser concurrency, OLTP, high availability, data warehousing, distributed databases, and extensions for Oracle8 and Oracle8i, including the latest Java and Web technologies. Oracle Essentials also includes an appendix full of references to additional online and offline resources. Another recently released Oracle title, Oracle8i Internal Services for Waits, Latches, Locks and Memory, is aimed especially at administrators and developers who need detailed internal information to do advanced performance tuning. Oracle 8i Internal Services lays a foundation for advanced performance tuning of the Oracle database. Based on Oracle8i release 8.1, the book describes many of the secrets of Oracle's internal services: data structures, algorithms, and undocumented Oracle system statistics. Main topics are: waits, latches, locks (including instance locks, used in parallel server environments), and Oracle's use of memory. He has written a book designed to bring developers up to speed as quickly as possible on the new PL/SQL features of Oracle8i. Following the style of Feuerstein's earlier books, Oracle PL/SQL Programming Guide to Oracle8i Features combines easy-to-understand descriptions of the new Oracle8i features with a wealth of interesting and informative examples. It covers autonomous transactions, invoker rights, native dynamic SQL, bulk binds and collects, system-level database triggers, new built-in packages, fine-grained access control, calling Java methods from within PL/SQL, and much more. PL/SQL developers will be able to take advantage of all the power of Java without giving up the performance and usability perks of PL/SQL. Oracle PL/SQL Programming Guide to Oracle8i offers enough Java know-how to build simple Java classes, load them into the Oracle8i database, and leverage those classes from within the PL/SQL code. Another recently released Oracle title, Oracle SAP Administration, focuses on the intersection of the SAP business system and the Oracle database management system. This book is designed for the experienced Oracle database administrator, system administrator, and developer who is using either Oracle8 or Oracle7. Oracle SAP Administration covers the most useful administration tools, SAPDBA and SAPGUI. It provides recommendations for the most efficient placement of data files; monitoring databases; reorganizing tables, tablespaces, and indexes; backing up and recovering databases; and tuning Oracle/SAP databases for best performance. There are chapters on special issues for parallel processing and for very large SAP databases, and a summary of additional resources for the Oracle/SAP administrator. DocBook: the Definitive Guide was written by Leonard Muellner and Norman Walsh, who is the creator of the DocBook XML implementation. This important new book is the complete and official documentation of the DocBook Document Type Definition (DTD) and many of its associated tools. DocBook is a system for writing structured documents using SGML and XML. It provides all the elements you'll need for technical documents of all kinds. A number of computer companies use DocBook for their documentation, as do several Open Source documentation groups, including the Linux Documentation Project (LDP). With the consistent use of DocBook, these groups can readily share and exchange information. With an XML-enabled browser, DocBook documents are as accessible on the Web as in print. From my perspective, that book is a keeper if for no other reason than the fact that Feuerstein wrote it. Personally, I have no feelings either way on the Oracle SAP Admin book. If someone ever documented the design of SAP, I'd be interested in that (I'm always interested in seeing designs, data models, etc.), but administration - eh, whatever. : ) IMHO Feuerstein does a stellar job on his books. PL/SQL is a rather impotent language (based on Ada) that has had its day as the procedural workhorse in Oracle's products. You really can't do anything very creative with it (e.g.- just try building data structures (trees, graphs, etc.)). While it attempts to bring some of the benefits of modern languages (e.g.- PL/SQL packages with their separation of interface from implementation) it doesn't go nearly far enough. However, if you need to use PL/SQL (because Oracle's done a good job of locking you in to using it or whatever), Feuerstein's books are a must read. On the bright side, it sounds like this book covers the use of Java in Oracle 8i. Java - now there's a language that's more livable (despite Sun's self-serving stewardship of it). Alright, I'm done rambling. : ) +joel --- Brandon Gohsman wrote: > Smash or Trash 2... > > -----Original Message----- > From: Christina Silveira [mailto:cms@oreilly.com] > Sent: Wednesday, November 10, 1999 6:48 PM > To: brandon@squareonedesign.com > Subject: New Oracle Books from O'Reilly > > FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE > CONTACT: Christina Silveira > (707)829-0515 ext. 339 > cms@oreilly.com > http://www.oreilly.com > > November 10, 1999 > > Request Your Review Copy from Christina Silveira > O'Reilly Releases Oracle PL/SQL Programming Guide to Oracle8i > Features > and Oracle SAP Administration > > SEBASTOPOL, CA-Steven Feuerstein, author of the well-received Oracle > PL/SQL series has done it again. O'Reilly & Associates' latest release in the handy Pocket Reference series, The XML Pocket Reference, is both a concise introduction to XML terminology and syntax, and a quick reference to XML instructions, attributes, entities, and data types. It also covers XSL (Extensible Stylesheet Language), necessary to ensure that your XML documents have a consistent look and feel across platforms. XML (the Extensible Markup Language) provides a more structured-and therefore more powerful-medium than HTML, allowing you to define new document types and style sheets as needed. Although the generic tags of HTML are sufficient for everyday text, XML gives you a way to add rich, well-defined markup to electronic documents. XML itself is complex, but its basic concepts are simple. This small book acts both as a perfect tutorial for learning the basics of XML, and as a convenient reference to the XML and XSL specifications. This new book is a comprehensive guide to Samba administration, including such recent additions as integration with Windows NT domains and the SWAT graphic configuration tool. "Samba is a cross-platform triumph," says Andy Oram, Editor, O'Reilly & Associates. "It turns a Unix or Linux system into a file and print server for Microsoft Windows network clients. Now you can let users store their files (and even important executables) in a single place for easy sharing and backup, protected by Unix or NT security mechanisms, and still offer such transparent access that PC users don't even realize they're going to another system. The magic behind Samba is that it recognizes and speaks the SMB protocol developed by Microsoft for file and printer sharing on its own systems." Basic Samba configuration is simple, but you'll want to make sure your security settings are just right and find out about the full range of options (how do you like your filenames mangled?). Trouble-shooting, security, connectivity, performance, and logging are thoroughly covered with examples in Using Samba. Samba is so robust, flexible, and secure that many people are choosing it over Windows NT for their file and print services. Furthermore, Samba is proving to be a necessity for the many organizations that have an existing Unix or Linux system and want to tie in PCs running Microsoft software. Samba is also Open Source software, licensed under the GNU General Public License. The authors, Robert Eckstein, David Collier-Brown, and Peter Kelly, present the most common configurations and problems in an easy-to-follow manner, along with instructions for getting the most out of Samba. Whether you're playing on one note or a full three-octave range, this book will give you an efficient and secure server. The included CD-ROM holds sources and ready-to-install binaries, plus other useful information. Chapter 5, Browsing and Advanced Disk Shares, is available free on the web at: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/samba/chapter/ch05.html For more information about the book, including Table of Contents, index, author bios, and sample chapter, see: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/samba/index.html For a cover graphic in jpeg format, go to: ftp://ftp.ora.com/pub/graphics/book_covers/hi-res/1565924495.jpg ### Using Samba Robert Eckstein, David Collier-Brown & Peter Kelly 1st Edition November 1999 (US) ISBN: 1-56592-449-5, 416 pages, $34.95 (US$) From brandon at squareonedesign.com Thu Nov 18 13:47:32 1999 From: brandon at squareonedesign.com (Brandon Gohsman) Date: Wed Aug 4 00:01:48 2004 Subject: Books from O'Reilly Message-ID: <001301bf31fd$c1c037b0$f427a8c0@brandon.mail.squareonedesign.com> Greetings everyone! "One of the simplest rules of systems administration is that disks and systems fail" says author W. Curtis Preston. "I lost four laptop disk drives while trying to write this book! (Yes, I had them backed up.) If you haven't already lost a system, or at least a disk drive, you might consider the statistical possibility that your time is coming really soon. It's a fact of life." Unix Backup & Recovery (O'Reilly $36.95) is an invaluable book for administrators that begins with detailed explanations of the native backup utilities available to the Unix administrator, and ends with practical advice on choosing a commercial backup utility. "Companies used to think they could create backup and recovery plans themselves with a couple of shell scripts. Now it's clear to most everyone that they can't do it without professional software and a professional implementation," says Preston. That's where Unix Backup & Recovery comes in. For small shops on tight budgets, it explains: 1. How to use the basic backup and recovery commands 2. He has taken an immense subject and attacked it with the passion that can only come from having been bitten too often by the improbable. He teaches us here how to avoid getting similarly nipped. The coverage is thorough...SysAdmins would do well to be sure that their newly hired team members find a copy on their desk on day one." -Art S. Kagel, Informix/Oracle DBA "To avoid losing valuable data, SysAdmins need reliable, easily accessible backups. Unix Backup & Recovery provides a comprehensive guide to performing backups for crucial systems and includes detailed information on topics such as hot and cold backups, database backup and recovery. And commercial options. Curtis' informed approach to developing effective backup procedures is refreshingly clear and practical. The expertise offered in this book can help SysAdmins prevent backup crises, which is valuable information indeed." -Amber Ankerholz, Editor-In-Chief, SysAdmin magazine For more information about the book, including Table of Contents, index, author bio, and samples, see: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/unixbr/ For a cover graphic in jpeg format, go to: ftp://ftp.ora.com/pub/graphics/book_covers/hi-res/1565926420.jpg ### Unix Backup & Recovery by W. Curtis Preston 1st Edition November 1999 (US) 1-56592-642-0, 734 pages, $36.95 (US$), Includes CD-ROM From Tim.Maletic at priority-health.com Tue Nov 30 15:43:32 1999 From: Tim.Maletic at priority-health.com (Maletic, Tim) Date: Wed Aug 4 00:01:48 2004 Subject: food for sysadmins Message-ID: <83254446C33AD311B925000092A767E502B1B1@yap.internal.priority-health.com> Fellow Mongers, The UNIX Team at Priority Health is looking for a new recruit. Veteran sysadmins need not apply, but I'm guessing there are some people on this list that have a good grasp of UNIX fundamentals, even though they've never been responsible for a dozen 24x7 database servers. We're looking for an entry-level system administrator that could -- with some training -- take over responsibilities for user account maintenance, printing subsystem maintenance, backups, patch administration, and monitoring of log files (among other things). If these duties don't sound really sexy, don't be misled. The IS department at Priority is on the cutting edge on several fronts. Over 4 TB of raw disk on shared disk arrays. High-speed ATM network backbone. High availability through site-to-site application fail-over. Internet services that will soon be ramping up to e-commerce-style applications. Our Senior Manager of Technical Services told me when I hired in: "Here, IS is the shop floor." Our product, in other words, is data. If you're interested, please send email to Aaron Nienhuis, our UNIX Team Leader, at aaron.nienhuis@priority-health.com, or call him at (616) 975-8465. ++$Luck; Tim Maletic
