I was just about to buy a book on PHP when this dropped in my mailbox (I'm interested in any alternative to ASP). So, it is on it's way as well. PHP is proving to be a powerful tool for building dynamic, database-driven websites. As with ASP, PHP (the initials refer to the first version of the program "Personal Home Page Tools") script is embedded within a Web page along with its HTML. Before the page is sent to a user that has requested it, the Web server calls PHP to interpret and perform the operations called for in the PHP script. This allows scripts to be built into HTML code that can access back-end databases, enabling on-the-fly creation of pages. O'Reilly & Associates has just published a handy reference to PHP-"The PHP Pocket Reference." Written by Rasmus Lerdorf (who started the PHP Project back in 1995 and has been actively involved in PHP development ever since), this small book acts both as a perfect tutorial for learning the basics of developing Web applications with PHP and as a reference to the vast array of functions provided by PHP. "The PHP language itself borrows concepts from other common languages, such as C and Perl. If you have some experience with one of these languages, you should feel right at home with PHP," says Lerdorf. A sample section from the book is available free online at: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/phppr/chapter/php_pkt.html For more information about the book, including Table of Contents, index, author bio, and samples, see: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/phppr/ For a cover graphic in jpeg format, go to: ftp://ftp.ora.com/pub/graphics/book_covers/hi-res/1565927699.jpg # # # PHP Pocket Reference By Rasmus Lerdorf 1st Edition January 2000 1-56592-769-9, 120 pages, $9.95 order@oreilly.com 1-800-998-9938 http://www.oreilly.com From dkyle at grpl.org Fri Feb 4 07:51:05 2000 From: dkyle at grpl.org (Doug Kyle) Date: Wed Aug 4 00:00:32 2004 Subject: FW: O'Reilly Publishes Concise Guide to PHP References: Message-ID: <389AD949.A4B0E320@grpl.org> One very powerful Perl based alternative to ASP is mod_perl: http://perl.apache.org/ Much of the excellent O'Reilly book on mod_perl is available online at http://www.modperl.com/. Also, Keith Sederholm (AKA "Mr. Food" : ) ) may be doing a cuisine upgrade this week from the usual Mom's lunch to The Seoul Garden (Mmmmm... Mongoloid Beef.). You should hear the final word on these matters by tomorrow (Thursday) morning sometime. And now for the certainties: The meeting is at Priority Health. Directions to Priority are available at the web site (grand-rapids.pm.org). ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Grand Rapids Perl Mongers Meeting Agenda for February 25th, 2000 (11:30am @ Priority Health) 1. Hellos, eats, and people filing in. - Everyone 2. Opening Words and Introductions (if necessary) - Joel M. 3. Lending Library - New Books, Etc. (And don't forget your overdue books... Poling. : ) ) - Brandon G. 4. Presentation: The Encryption Chapter from "Mastering Algorithms with Perl" - Steve Poling 5. Presentation: "Remind 2000" - An Automatic Reminder Emailer. We'll be looking at code and talking about how to integrate an idea into a system/installation (how to deal with certain NT type issues, for example). - Steve Johnson 6. Finalize/Review Topic and Location for next Meeting. Any new ideas/requests for future topics/presentations? 7. Adjourn 8. Just Kidding Poling! (about putting you on the agenda this month) You can relax. Oh, and Tjapkes put me up to it. : ) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? As before, you'll need to check in at the front receptionist's desk and be escorted down to Classroom #1. As for lunch, we're going ahead with the cuisine upgrade to Seoul Garden even though we've run into a snag. The copy of the mini-menu that we scanned in is basically unreadable. So I'll be typing in the menu (sometime during the class I'm in all day today) and sending it out. To give you a basic idea right now, Seoul Garden has all the usual chinese dishes and they typically cost between $5.25 and $6.50. You'll need to choose between steamed rice and fried rice. If you want soup it costs extra. They have hot-n-sour (mmm mmm yummy) and eggdrop soup and others I think. You'll need to get your order to Keith Sederholm (keith.sederholm@priority-health.com) by 9:30am tomorrow (Friday) morning. +Joel --- Joel Meulenberg wrote: > First, the nail-biting uncertainties of this month's gathering: > > We will likely be meeting in the 3rd floor Board Rooms of the 1231 > building, but that has not yet been confirmed.
