Message-ID: <20070802172740.GH7053@aaroncrane.co.uk> At the risk of jinxing matters, I observe that the last few days or so haven't been completely rained out. I further note that: - August is a bad month for finding space in Edinburgh pubs - eighth-anniversary celebrations have been mooted - we've been vaguely planning a picnic for ages now - some people want cakes So, who's up for attempting a picnic in place of our normal meeting on Wednesday 8th? Here's a proposal: - Calton Hill - from 7pm-ish on Wednesday August 8th - bring food/drink/rugs/frisbee/cakes/whatever - if it looks like bad weather, fall back to the Guildford Arms (and coordinate by mobile phone) Aye? The map for Edinburgh is coming along quite nicely: http://tinyurl.com/2enznm However, if you zoom in you will notice many areas are infested with FIXME's where road names really should be: http://tinyurl.com/2gc93s So I'd like to request some of your local help. Think of it like a birthday present! = Easy Option : Print and Scribble = * Find an area with FIXMEs you know about http://tinyurl.com/2enznm * Print it * Optionally walk/cycle/segway yourself around streets to confirm names * Scribble the road names in by hand * Give me the printout and I'll do the data entry 'cause, yes, the toolset is currently a bit painful to use. You may be rewarded with cake ;) = Harder, more rewarding Option : DIY = * Pop to openstreetmap http://tinyurl.com/2552j5 * Signup (top right) * Return to Edinburgh http://tinyurl.com/2552j5 * Find an area with FIXMEs you know about * Click the Edit tab, top left * Wait for the satellite images to load, and then the "Ways" (You'll eventually get lines atop the satellite images) * Click on a "Way" (the mouse changes from a pen tip to a hand) * Just below the Satellite images, you can enter a street name If you click by mistake, Escape cancels. If you don't see a "Name" field, change the "primary/secondary/tertiary/residential/unclassified road" bit to something else, then back again to it's original value. You should now have a Name field to fill in. More help on editting via the Flash App http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Potlatch and if you enjoy a bit of mild self inflicted torture and want to do more detailed stuff there is the Java client: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/JOSM Some nerdy facts it took me a while to figure out: * The OSM map http://openstreetmap.org/ updates weekly. * The map at http://www.informationfreeway.org/ updates more regularly (note Permalink bottom right and grey text bottom left about render requests) * For a little more background info: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Beginners_Guide_1.3 http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Beginners_Guide_1.4 There is also an Edinburgh Mappers party towards the end of August [3]. And a couple of you have expressed interest in having a game. So I've provisionally arranged a Perlmongers Croquet Night. Normally, Wednesday evenings is a club night. BUT I've asked the Committee, and they have agreed to me using one of the lawns for "outsiders" on WEDNESDAY THE 12TH OF SEPTEMBER. This is the normal September Perlmongers night. The limiting factor is that it is hard to play at your best once it gets dark:-) So to get a reasonable amount of playing time, we'll need to start "early". I'd suggest meeting around 6:30. We'll then have a couple of hours to get organised and play before adjourning t' pub soon after dark. Depending on weather and enthusiasm, we'd be there, I guess, by 9:30. Cloisters is very nearby if we didn't want to go as far as the Guildford. You can get up to eight people playing on one lawn, so we should be able to accommodate everyone who's likely to come (probably even if some want to "bring a friend"). I'm by no means an expert, but I know enough to teach people the rules, and you'll certainly be able to "get going" and actually play straight away, so it should be fun. There would be a "Green Fee" of 5 pounds, which would include use of equipment (i.e. a mallet). You'll need to wear soft-soled shoes, so as not to damage the lawn. If you're interested, please let me know ASAP, and as soon as I know there is enough interest I'll confirm the arrangement with the club...
