The Powers that Be in the Perl Monger Support team suggest that we look like a dead group. We havnen't had a post to the mailing list since 2007 (well apparently I've posted but I've been alone), and our wiki the day they went to look at it was covered in Spam (bad spammers!). Their argument is "If you're not a group of people who talk about Perl ... why are you a Perl Monger Group?" ... which I tried to explain that we *were* a group of people who talk about Perl ... just not regularly or often. I asked if I could put the call out and have people mail him ... he surprised me with: [12:04] uh... ya, please do. I'm jay at jays.net. Have them tell me why Dahut is a Perl Monger group and why it needs a web site and mailing list. :) So ... URL: From khampton at totalcinema.com Mon Aug 11 13:04:52 2008 From: khampton at totalcinema.com (Kip Hampton) Date: Mon, 11 Aug 2008 13:04:52 -0700 Subject: [Dahut-pm] Regarding Dahut.pm Message-ID: <48A09B64.6040303@totalcinema.com> Hi Jay. I heard over the weekend that there was a plan afoot to shut down the Dahut.pm Perl Mongers group. I'm writing in opposition to that plan to pull the plug. Its true that, unlike, say, Boston.pm or Paris.pm, the Dahut group is "virtual". Members are scattered all over the globe and, as a practical matter, we don't do some of the things that "regular" .pms do (no monthly technical or social meetings, no local community outreach to other technical or service organizations, etc.). Despite our scattershot geographical distribution, however, the Dahuts fit every other criterion of an active and activist Perl community: we coordinate on maintaining and developing modules for CPAN, we work together on both the topics and content of the books, presentations, and other educational materials that we present to the community at large, and, perhaps most importantly, we're always the funnest table at the bar during YAPC and OSCON conferences. It is also true that our membership is small and that our .pm mailing list and wiki have fallen into disuse. Mostly, we're victims of our own success. While most members chat with one another daily on IRC, the reality is that the each member of the original Dahut core has gone on to distinguish themselves both as Perl hackers and in the broader technical world and we simply don't have the time to kick things around that we used to. These days, we're more likely to pair off on specific projects (or get one another hired in as an issue expert) than we are to go after more generic projects as group. I ask you to please reconsider your decision to pull the plug on Dahut.pm. We may be a pack of irreverent absurdists but the Dahuts are no joke. As for the mailing list and wiki, I'm willing to personally commit time to make sure that the yard stays mowed and the papers don't pile up on the front steps. Thanks for your consideration, Kip Hampton, Dahut.pm member in good standing. ps: I should note that, as a group, the Dahuts are not above naked bribery and/or extortion. This means that, should your decision go our way, you can expect to drink for free at least one night at the next conf you attend with a significant Dahut contingent and that you can trust our entire membership to state publicly that any rumors relating to your special fondness for woodchucks are categorically not true and anyway it was just that once and you said you were sorry. Their argument is "If you're not a group of people who > talk about Perl ... why are you a Perl Monger Group?" Now, now, that's just horse bollocks on a lollipop stick*. We might not use email or the wiki much (though we do, to some extent), but that's mostly because email is so 1972 and wikis were always an evil idea anyway. As others have mentioned, we communicate a lot through IRC, but also through the many structures we have secretly claimed as our own, such as london.pm, paris.pm, and several others, the eGov IG, and a fair share of the world's shadier dives. Our existence is made obvious by three Acme distros (Acme::Dahut, Acme::Dahut::Call, and Acme::Lingua::NIGERIAN). We have a CPAN ID which can be used for collective releases, DAHUT (granted it hasn't been used much recently as Perl XML development has cooled off as lot since stuff pretty much works). Also, we are decreed normatively to exist by multiple W3C specifications: http://www.w3.org/TR/rex/, http://www.w3.org/TR/SVGMobile12/text.html , http://www.w3.org/TR/powder-use-cases/; which is another way of saying that removing us breaks the Web. Our fearless leader Bender runs a lot of irc.perl.org channels. All this to say that you may have travelled a path of blindness all these years, but we have been around since before time was time, the just-out-of-earshot whisper deep in the circular fabric of reality. On top of that we buy beer, we're sexy, and we're funny. Besides beer, we also have special powers. Kjetil for instance is a world record holder in firewalking. Kip has the ability to make the mix of two alcohol parts greater than their sum. I also make a mean cheesecake. There are many others but if we wanted everyone to know we'd have put it on the wiki in the first place. Anyway, we're a group. In fact, we're probably the coolest group. Join us, and together we can rule the galaxy as donkeys do. * I mention this also because horse bollocks on a lollipop stick is a lot what an alpine delicacy known as "amourettes de dahut" looks like. -- Robin Berjon - http://berjon.com/ From jwalt at cpan.org Tue Aug 12 03:36:42 2008 From: jwalt at cpan.org (=?iso-8859-1?q?J=F6rg_Walter?=) Date: Tue, 12 Aug 2008 12:36:42 +0200 Subject: [Dahut-pm] keeping dahut.pm In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <200808121236.42412.jwalt@cpan.org> On Friday, 08.
