I build pages using a header file, navigation file, actual html pages, & the
footer file, so the html might look like this:
<!--header--->
<!--nav-->
<h1>boring header</h1>
bla bla bla
<!--footer-->
Making changes to thousands of pages takes seconds, and the boring content
remains the same.
I'm using mod_perl to parse the tags so the link you're on is highlighted.
If this wasn't important, I'd just use SSI for all. For example:
<!--#include virtual=/header-->
<!--#include virtual=/nav-->
<h1>boring header</h1>
bla bla bla
<!--#include virtual=/footer-->
Even the marketing idiots can edit their own webpages:)
Here's the NavBar.pm that I got from the Eagle book and customized;

This website is also a working demo.
Never messed with XML yet. Like to keep it on a need to mess basis:)

Glad the list is picking back up again. I have been pretty since April
due to changing jobs and the horridness of the job I changed to. It's
getting better but still has to be in the bottom 10% rating IT jobs in
the world. The management is interesting.
Anyway, we could start meeting again. I think we still have Chad Lavy
at March First open to allowing us meet at the Smith Bros. hardware
building. I haven't updated the web page for a while, but since I have
to update my domain as well I think I can do them together.
What are people's thoughts on using perl to automate the building of a
website. I was working on XML documents for content and then having
seperate files for layout and templates but I have not been working on
it for a couple months. Has anyone worked with web pages this way?
Traditionally, I would edit in dreamweaver and FTP it up, but I was
looking for a more organized way to use XML and perl as a tool. I am
extremely busy and slightly unorganized, so hopefully this will all get
done soon.
