Here's a simple, not great script somebody else wrote called updown.  You 
can create a conf file (sample at the beginning of the script) w/ each 
host and pretty much choose what op you want to test (ping, http, ftp 
etc.). It's got a few issues, but it seems to work.

Again, I didn't write it (Yufan Hu did back in '01) and it has some 
non-perlish-ness to it. I cleaned it up a tad but there are some things 
I'd do differently.  There are probably modules to do much of the ugly 
parts now.
