[Chicago-talk] Stealth Perl Install and then the old swap-a-roo?

i'm not sure if this is what is happening but here's a lesson i learned

when i first moved to debian, i decided that i didn't like the perl they
installed

so i downloaded the source and compiled a new perl

things started failing

i learned that perl is special to debian (as it is to all of us) and
that it is best to wait for the maintainer to release a new version (use
something other than stable if you want fast upgrades)

but if you can't wait for the maintainer, then you need to compile and
install perl the "debian way" which means download the source using
"apt-get source perl" and doing a few extra steps

but there is a 5.8.1 version available, so unless you want something
else...
