As we move into another year, I'd like to take some time to plan where you'd like to see the group go this year. Over the last year, interest in the group has grown as more people began to learn about us. The mailing list now has almost 50 members. Thanks to support from Red F and Business Journals, we were able to take the meetings out of the coffee shop and into meeting rooms with overhead projector and internet access. As a result, the average meeting size grew from 4 to 8. I'd like to see that number double again this year! For those of you who are interested in helping to grow the group, meeting some great folks and talking more about our favorite subjects, please come out and join us for a planning meeting next week. We'll be meeting at Hawthorne's New York Pizza[1] at 6:30pm on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday evening. Please reply to this email with your preferred meeting day. We'll make a decision over the weekend. Also, please reserve Jan. 19th for the first meeting of the year. Stay tuned for the topic and meeting location. Cheers! If you're able to join us, we'll be meeting at Hawthorne's New York Pizza[1] at 6:30pm on Tuesday, January 10th. Bring your ideas for topics, speakers and meeting spots. If you can't join us, feel free to submit your ideas to the list. Whether or not you're coming on Tuesday, be sure to join us next Thursday on the 19th for our regular meeting. Stay tuned for the location and topic. I'm looking foward to seeing the Queens University campus and discussing Dada Mail, Movable Type, WebGUI and Kwiki. If you haven't looked at Movable Type in a while, you may be surprised by it's features including Localization, editable object-oriented perl code, PHP support, even more plugins and compatibility with XHTML. Six Apart is really doing a great job on their software and company! Last year, Six Apart acquired Live Journal and Yahoo recently came on board as a hosting partner for MT3. And to think...all this from two web developers, Mena and Ben Trott, who now own a profitable open-source software development company. More info: http://www.sixapart.com Dada Mail is also a very handy tool for Newsletters and mailing lists. It takes less than 5 minutes to set up and also has plugins and extensions. If you handle newsletters, Dada Mail has some great features you don't want to miss out on. More information on Dada Mail is at http://mojo.skazat.com/features Looking forward to seeing you this evening! I think doing a recap on this topic later in the year would definitely be worthwhile. There are several other apps such as Kwiki, CVSMonitor, RT, NMS scripts and more that we didn't have a chance to cover. Thanks to Queens University for hosting us. Before the meeting, I was talking about a Dada Mail bug that I had just tracked down earlier in the day. I wrote a message to Justin, the lead developer, and received the following response from him (where will you get a patch from a commercial vendor at 9:15pm at night on the same day you reported the issue?!).
