Tentou baixar manualmente  tarball e instalar para ver se o erro ainda ocorre?

Estou tentando instalar no Ubuntu Server, não compilando o 
> modulo, mas através do comando CPAN e no prompt install GD

tentei tambem

> INSTALLDIRS='' e não consegui instalar.

Qualquer ajuda é bem
