Paul Wayper who runs the CLUG Programmers' Special Interest Group Meeting has kindly arranged facilities for the talk. At this stage I can't tell you what Paul will be talking on, but there's a very good chance that there'll be a Perlish talk on something to be announced followed by: An Illustrated History of Software Failure Paul Fenwick - Paul Training Australia The average individual is given little scope for failure, at least not the type that really matters. However in recent times we have developed a profession who have the opportunity to fail like never before. The few, the proud, the Software Developers. Join us for a voyage of discovery, as we travel back through history to some of the most monumental failures the world has ever seen. Paul Fenwick is the managing director of Perl Training Australia, and is an experienced speaker at technical conferences worldwide. His interests include security, mycology, cycling, coffee, scuba diving, and lexically scoped user pragmata. The SIG details are below, but I'm not sure whether the location is correct. Paul Wayper to advise. CLUG Programmers' Special Interest Group Meeting - 8th May 2008 =============================================================== Date: 8th May 2008 (Second Thursday of the month) Time: 18:30 - 21:00 (or when it finishes) Venue: Canberra City Pancake Parlour Find platform 4 in the City Interchange (see map below) and then look for the Pancake Parlour sandwich board. At the bottom of the stairs, look for the PSIG sign on the counter and a stuffed penguin in the indicated direction. http://tinyurl.com/dyexl Food/drink: The Pancake Parlour has a large variety of food and drink available, so bring some cash and grab a bite to eat or drink. -- ("`-''-/").___..--''"`-._ | Jacinta Richardson | `6_ 6 ) `-. I wasn't expecting such a large audience (we ran out of seating), or such enthusiasm for my presentations. ;) I do remember that I had a couple of people ask me about volunteering to help with the care and feeding of Canberra.pm. If you're still interested in doing so, speaking up on the list is the best way to get started. One of the things that Paul Wayper discussed at the pub the idea of Canberra.pm / PSIG working on a project together. This e-mail is partially to remind you of that idea, to kick off any conversation. Finally, if you spoke to me at the meeting, and I said I'd do something, and I haven't yet, then I may have forgotten. Please drop me an e-mail, or, if you use hiveminder[1], send me a task at pjf at perltraining.com.au . Given the interest at last meet, I believe the Canberra PM group has good prospects to continue meeting up and what-not. I would be happy to contribute to the mailing list if there is no-one currently maintaining it (not sure what this involves though...). I think Paul's idea of a project would be a great idea to get this started, and would provide an ongoing focus for further meetings. Before we start booking conference halls however, It would be good to get a count of people who are serious about getting involved (either in a regular PM meet, a project or both). If anyone has any bright ideas of an interesting project they would like to see happen, speak up. I think something that is based on the web (or at least has a web front-end) would be great, as the little experience I have had with Perl and the web (CGI::Ajax, SOAP::Lite) has been really fun, doesn't involve anything too hardcore or obscure, and can involve people of all skill levels. In particular, using JSON to pass complex data structures back-and-forward between Perl and Javascript is the bomb! I would also like to hear some ideas on the format for any PM meet up....do we organize training sessions, talks, workshops, or just ad-lib it on the night? So if you have some particular area of interest or a topic you want to discuss, speak up! Hope to hear from you all.. Jeremy Price, the listed group leader of Canberra PM, is current missing. His currently registered address with pm.org ( http://www.pm.org/groups/537.html ) is bouncing. If you're happy to become the new leader then all you need to do is follow the instructions here: http://groups.pm.org/faq.html#how_do_i_request_a_new_group_or_to_reactivate_a_group_that_has_been_inactive although familiarising yourself with most of the rest of the information on that page is probably a good idea too. Once you do this, you will be responsible for keeping the website up to date (for some definition of up to date) and moderating posts/spam from non-members to the list. With respect to keeping the website up to date, you are more than welcome to redirect http://canberra.pm.org/ to point to the PerlNet wiki Canberra PM page http://perl.net.au/wiki/Canberra_Perl_Mongers (which is also a bit out of date). This way everyone can then help maintain your page. perl.net.au (run by Paul and myself) has fairly good spam capturing and monitoring, so your page should be fairly safe from bot-vandalism. Sydney Perl Mongers does this at http://sydney.pm.org If you have any questions, I'd be delighted to help. davorg's sent out the census this morning: http://use.perl.org/article.pl?sid=08/05/11/2133229 So there's no time to waste! I just haven't seen it around as much as I'd like ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for Papers Open Source Developers' Conference 2008 1st - 5th December 2008, Sydney, Australia The Open Source Developers' Conference 2008 is a conference run by open source developers, for developers and business people. It covers numerous programming languages across a range of operating systems, and related topics such as business processes, licensing, and strategy. Talks vary from introductory pieces through to the deeply technical. It is a great opportunity to meet, share, and learn with like-minded individuals. This year, the conference will be held in Sydney, Australia during the first week of December (1st - 5th). If you are an Open Source maintainer, developer or user, the organising committee would encourage you to submit a talk proposal on open source tools, solutions, languages or technologies you are working with. For more details and to submit your proposal(s), go to: http://osdc.com.au/2008/papers/cfp.html If you have any questions or require assistance with your submission, please don't hesitate to ask! We recognise the importance of Open Source in providing a medium for collaboration between individuals, researchers, business and government. In recognition of this and ensure a high standard of presentations, we intend to peer-review all submitted papers. OSDC 2008 Sydney (Australia) - Key Program Dates: 30 Jun - Initial proposals (short abstract) due 21 Jul - Proposal acceptance 15 Sep - Accepted paper submissions 13 Oct - Reviews completed 27 Oct - Final paper submission cut-off For all information, contacts and updates, see the OSDC conference web site at http://osdc.com.au/2008/ Also if you are interested in sponsoring, please see: http://www.osdc.com.au/2008/sponsors/opportunities.html Regards Mark Rees OSDC 2008 Marketing Co-ordinator From pjf at perltraining.com.au Sat May 17 21:12:55 2008 From: pjf at perltraining.com.au (Paul Fenwick) Date: Sun, 18 May 2008 14:12:55 +1000 Subject: [Canberra-pm] White Camel nominations are now open Message-ID: <482FACC7.6000409@perltraining.com.au> ---------- Forwarded Message: ---------- Subject: [pm_groups] White Camel nominations are now open Date: Saturday 17 May 2008 From: "Jos? Castro" Every year, at OSCON, the White Camels are presented. If you look at the previous winners [1], you'll notice that these are mostly unsung heroes, like previous awardee Eric Cholet, the human moderator of so many Perl mailing lists, or Jay Hannah, one of the people running pm.org [2] (if you ever created/maintained a pm group, chances are that Jay walked you through the process). Some of these people may be well known, like Allison Randal or Randal Schwartz, while others may be complete strangers to at least part of the globe, like Josh McAdams or Jay. Some of them may be extreme Perl hackers who created the original JAPH, but they actually received this award as a recognition for their community contributions to Perl. That's not to say a great hacker can't receive the award, but you don't have to be one in order to be eligible. That being said, the nomination process for the 2008 White Camels is now open. If you think there's someone who deserves a White Camel, this is the time for you to send in your nominations. Send them to jose at pm.org, if possible with a subject along the lines of "White Camel Nomination :: $name". Make sure you properly identify the nominee and tell us why you think that's a worthy nomination. Don't go thinking "nah, somebody else will do it" because: a) everybody else may be thinking the same, and b) you may state your case differently than the next person. We'll be receiving nominations until June 11, 2008, by midnight, but don't wait up or you'll forget. Do it now! Regards, jac PS: Please forward as you see fit. Michael, if you haven't taken over group leadership yet, can you let us know where you are up to? If you're waiting on groups.pm.org can you send davorg a note at: census at pm.org to let him know what's going on. It'd be good not to lose Canberra PM now that there's so much interest in it. I am suggesting a Thursday or Friday night in Civic, something along the lines of dinner then find a quiet table somewhere (the back-room in King O'Malleys works well), but Im open to suggestions. Ideas people! I would also like people who intend to come to start thinking about answering these three questions, which we will share on the night: 1) What is a cool/fun/interesting thing you have done with Perl recently? 2) What aspect of Perl would you like to learn more about or improve in? 3) An idea for a group project (Optional) Cheers MP -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... There's been occasional talk of a Programming SIG project - something that we can all work on individually or in small groups as a contribution to Open Source and the free world. This has also been talked about at the Python SIG and from what I could tell amongst the Canberra Perl Mongers. The basic precis is to work on a system that can be deployed for Linux Users Groups that manages the basic chores such as sending out notices of meetings, providing a website and mailing list, and so forth. It would be designed as a system that can either be deployed on a Linux Australia server or on a LUG's own machine if they desire. The project would allow people of all abilities to work on various components and the mix of programming languages used in existing projects to be meshed in with the LUG-in-a-box system would mean that different programming groups could get involved. There are already plans afoot in Linux Australia to work on this, so I don't want to run ahead of more developed plans. So start thinking about what ideas you'd like to see in a larger LUG herding system and stay tuned!
