G'day everyone,

Andrew Pollock seems to have successful drummed up some further interest in
Canberra PM, and as Jeremy is responding to Dave Cross, all should be going well.

It appears that Steve Walsh is very happy to share CLUG Programmers SIG meetings
with Canberra PM every third month.  These are held on the second Thursday of
the month at the Pancake Parlour in the city.   Thus you now can reasonably
expect to have 3-4 meetings a year!  Hooray!  I'm sure you're also welcome to
the PSIG meetings during the other months too, but Steve will correct me if I'm
wrong.

Of course, it will help if you can think of topics volunteer to present at your
meetings, as neither Paul or I will be around quite that often.  :)  Paul and I
*are* scheduled to be in Canberra in July at the moment.  I'm sure we'll have
lots of talks to give at that time.  :)

presentations.

Please let me know if you have any objections or comments, If I don't hear

and we can start monging away.

More than happy to have some Perl Mongers along to our meetings, and they
needn't restrict themselves to only coming to the Perl flavoured PSIG
meetings, any PSIG is fine.

PSIG's are the second Thursday of the month, and are held at The Pancake
Parlour in Canberra City. I'll try to remember to post details out to the
canberra-pm list at the same time, or maybe even cludge the web system to do
it automagically

It's really good to hear from you again.  While you were away, the PerlNet
portal ( http://perl.net.au/ ) ended its beta phase and has gone live!
PerlNet's goal is to be a meeting place for businesses, user groups, and
individuals from Australia and New Zealand to discuss and learn about Perl.
Individuals can request contributions to projects, businesses can more
effectively hire new employees, and user groups can better communicate with
their members and each other.

In particular, PerlNet has a number of things to offer Perl Monger groups:

including the option of replacing or supplementing their pm.org site.  For
example, Sydney PM ( http://sydney.pm.org ) now redirect their page to the

and other fun stuff like that.

We'd love Canberra Perl Mongers to get involved in PerlNet regardless of whether

We have a winner!!

Tridge (Andrew Tridgell) has offered to talk about adding transactions to
tdb.

Background;

For those who don't know, tdb is the little database inside Samba, and
recently he's added transactions to it, to allow for rollback and make
it crash safe. That raised some interesting problems with fsync(),
msync() and undo logs, plus techniques for avoiding a separate
transaction file.

Aaron Seigo from KDE recently showed some interest in incorporating
this stuff into KDE (via ldb), and Tridge has done some optimisations to tdb
to make this practical. Tridge will (hopefully) discuss the problems Aaron
hit and how
they were fixed.

Many thanks to those who came along tonight for Tridge's talk, it turned out
to be one of our best attended PSIGs yet.

Just a gentle reminder that if you do order and get food, please remember to
pay for it at the counter before leaving. There were a few items on the bill
that weren't paid for. If you think you did accidently forget to pay, please
contact Paul Wayper on paulway at mabula.net to claim them as yours
(he was nice enough to be the last one to pay).

Canberra Perl Mongers meeting.  Unfortunately neither Paul or myself will be
there, so it's up to *you* to think of something to talk about, or suggest
something you'd like to hear about.

Have you done anything really cool in Perl recently?  Is there a Perl module you
just couldn't live without?  How are you at testing - could you give an
introductory session on Test::Simple or Test::More?  Perhaps you're keeping up
with what's involved in the Perl 6 development, and could give everyone a
summary of how it's going?  Have you used PUGS - perhaps you could give a demo?

It doesn't matter if you've never presented before and you expect to be nervous,
just shorten your presentation to 10 minutes.  Most intelligent adults can
listen politely to a bad presentation for 10 minutes.   A good presentation, on
the other hand, might get your audience to ask you for more.  :)

If you are unable to present a talk this time, please have a good think about
what you would like learn about.  Bring this up on the list, there might be
someone who knows all about it and assumes everyone else does too.

Don't be put off by your knowledge, you won't be booed off the chair, or
pelted with pancakes, the worst that may happen is someone may suggest a
better way to do whatever it is you're talking about. From C flavoured Perl
to Perl with a twist of python, give it some thought and get back to me with
a talk idea. Even if your talk is only 10 minutes long, it may lead to 2
hours of questions that can explain everything to you (and everyone else).
