George,
You misunderstood me.  We didn't experiment with anything.

We, the Dallas/Fort Worth Perl Mongers, had the same bot try to
subscribe to our mailing list.  We are looking at ways of banning
bots but allowing humans to subscribe.  I'll keep you posted on
what (if anything) we come up with.
