As a daily commuter across the border I'd suggest stopping by this URL
before leaving home to decide which bridge to use:
http://maps.nittec.org/mappage.aspx
select check box for cameras, then click on camera icons for popups with
live video feed snapshots (update ~60sec). This is the closest thing to
"live" information on border crossings. With backups on the Queenston
Lewiston crossing adding an extra hour to the trip, it's worth sometimes
to take the Peace Bridge -- there have been virtually no lines there on
the Canadian side for the past several months.
The QEW is undergoing major road work through St. Catharines, beware of
congestion. Traffic tends to be bad towards the early evening hours
(7-8pm) and things are usually backed up from the 405 junction (where
405 from Queenston meets the QEW) through the Garden City Skyway.
There's no easy way around that, unless one takes the Rainbow Bridge to
the QEW, then takes the Thorold Stone Road (Hwy 58) exit to the 406
north and back to the QEW. That puts you on the far side of St.
Catharines and the far side of the construction zone.
For traffic info on the Canadian side, from Ft. Erie to T.O. tune into
AM 610 for traffic reports every 15 minutes (or www.610cktb.com for a
live stream).
