Important Dates/Deadlines ------------------------- April 18 -- deadline for paper submissions May 12 -- last day of guaranteed accommodations YAPC::NA is a grassroots, all-volunteer conference. The speaker quality is high, the participants lively, and there are many extra social activities scheduled. We expect a bit over 400 people this year, and registration is proceeding faster this year than in the past. The registration cost is USD$85. Information on registration: http://yapc.org/America/register-2005.shtml http://yapc.org/America/registration-announcement-2005.txt Direct link to registration: http://donate.perlfoundation.org/index.pl?node=registrant%20info&conference_id=423 Want to be a speaker? Deadline for proposal submission is April 18, just over 1 week from now. Go to: http://yapc.org/America/cfp-2005.shtml Need accommodations in Toronto? Go to: http://yapc.org/America/accommodations-2005.shtml If you book before May 13 you will be guaranteed a hotel space. After that getting accommodations will become progressively more difficult. Prices we have arranged are in two different price ranges: approximately US$50 for a dorm room, US$72 for a decent hotel room. All accommodations are very nearby the conference venue. This message comes from the YAPC::NA 2005 organizers in Toronto.pm, http://to.pm.org/, on behalf of The Perl Foundation, http://www.perlfoundation.org/ We look forward to seeing you in Toronto! We have quite a few people on the list, but only a few regulars at meetings. Is it: - Thursdays are bad for me; - Irregular schedule (that's my fault, but it will be remedied); - Bad location/don't want to drive to UB; - Topics aren't relevant to me; - We want food/beer served; Many of these things can be addressed in different ways, but I can only respond if I'm aware of the issues. Feel free to respond to the list or to me personally. Agenda: * Talk about the items above and consider getting a regular monthly/bi-monthly meeting schedule set again; * Talk about plans for meetings over the summer; * YAPC in Toronto--quick discussion; * Main presentation: I've had a request for a demo/presentation on Perl/Tk and I agree that this is a cool topic. This module is one way to generate a GUI with Perl. Any volunteers? The other Perl GUI module is wxPerl, as discussed here: http://www.perl.com/pub/a/2001/09/12/wxtutorial1.html Volunteers for either would be cool. Message-ID: <20050426224733.91705.qmail@web21124.mail.yahoo.com> All, I was inspired at last weeks meeting when Kevin was saying that it would be cool to listen to slashdot on the way to work. So I wrote a little script that will (somewhat) do that. It's a bit of a hack job, but it basically just parses the articles from slashdot and passes it to the Microsoft text-to-speech utility through the Win32 module. Prereq: cURL - http://curl.planetmirror.com/download.html Here's the script: package Speech; use Win32::OLE; sub TIEHANDLE { my $voice = Win32::OLE->new('Speech.VoiceText'); $voice->Register('', 'Perl'); bless \$voice => shift; } sub PRINT { my $voice = shift; my $text = join('', @_); print STDOUT $text, "\n"; $$voice->Speak($text, 0); } sub DESTROY { my $voice = shift; sleep(1) while $$voice->IsSpeaking; } package main; $| = 1; $/="Posted by"; tie *SPEECH, 'Speech'; END {untie *SPEECH} # Assumes that the curl.exe file is located in the current directory system("curl.exe -s http\:\/\/slashdot.org >slashtalk.temp"); open SLASH, "slashtalk.temp" or die "can't open file\n"; @slashdot = ; print SPEECH "Here are the $#slashdot most current stories from slashdot."; foreach (@slashdot) { if (/Posted by/i) { s/<(?:[^>\'\"]*|([\'\"]).*?\1)*>//gs; @art = split /\n/; $i = 0; for($i=2; $i < 5; $i++) { print SPEECH "$art[$i]\n" unless /^$/; } } } Everything works great on my machine, but when I tried the script on Mike's laptop, I get the following error: "cant call method 'Register' on undefined value at line 18" Line 18 is: $voice->Register('', 'Perl'); Does anyone know why this works on my machine and not on Mike's? The only difference I can possibly see is that I'm running Win XP Pro and he's on XP Home. Is this something that can be solved by using perl2exe? If so, can I include the cURL files within that exe? Thoughts? -Dan __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
