Unfortunately March 11th is my 21st B-Day...so I will be busy consuming beverages and making a fool of myself...

Time flies! According to our regular second-Thursday schedule, the next
meeting for the Buffalo Perl Mongers is scheduled for this Thursday,
March 11th.

I apologize for not have planned anything out in advance for this
month, but we can still meet for a general meeting this Thursday, at
7-8:30 p.m., at Alternative Brews, 3488 Sheridan Drive, Amherst. If any of
you want to take part in some general planning and discussion, let
me know.

Among other topics (suggestions welcome) that we might discuss Thursday
evening, there are the following:

(1) There are a couple of Toronto Perl Mongers events we should discuss
organizing road trips for:

There is a March 25th "Pair Programming" meeting that Jim Brandt pointed
out last month (more info at http://to.pm.org/#032004). People will pair
off at this meeting with a laptop and collaborate to design a module
with an assigned list of requirements. Tom Legrady, who is hosting
this meeting, will play the role of "client" and
"contact-with-the-client", clarifying any questions or problems. One
idea behind this is to pair up randomly and pair off more experienced
with less experienced programmers, so this is great opportunity to learn
something new and trade ideas and techniques with other Perl hackers.

Also, Mark Jason Dominus will be giving talks in Toronto the first
weekend of June (he will probably not be at the YAPC conference here in
Buffalo, so if you want an opportunity to meet him anytime in the near
future, you ought to make the pilgrimage to Canada for his talks that
weekend). TPM is soliciting contributions from anyone attending to cover
MJD's travel expenses. I'll circulate some more info about that soon.

I can drive up to Toronto for both the above-mentioned events and can
take 3 other people in my car. For March 25th, we'd have to leave Buffalo
by 4:30 p.m., latest, and we would probably be back in Amherst by 11:30
p.m. This is a long evening for a weeknight, but the Toronto group is a
fun and talented crowd, so the trip is well worth it.

(2) I'd like to fill in our own events schedule and project it
out to at least June. We need speakers for April 8th and May 13th. In
particular, I'm hoping that we can get two volunteers from this mailing
list to commit to an hour talk, which can be, for example, on a
particular module, using Perl for certain types of problems (e.g. text
processing, data munging), etc.

(3) I'd like some advice and help on revamping our site at
buffalo.pm.org, such as possibly adding RSS feeds from use.perl.org and
CPAN, design improvements, etc.

(4) I'd also like to discuss the idea of how we could best fund out-of-town
speakers for programming later in the year. For example, we can do this on
an as-needed basis, or we can nominate a treasurer from among our ranks
and
ask all list members to pitch in a modest annual amount up front for the
year's programming. For example, we have 46 list members, if everyone
contributed $20/year, that would give us about $900: good for at least
two speakers from anywhere in the U.S. (or at least four on
bargain-basement multiple-stop Expedia red-eye specials).

We can certainly discuss all of this on the list, but I hope at least a
few of you can make it to Alternative Brews this Thursday for a couple of
beers.

Kevin C.
