Randal Schwartz will be in Buffalo the week of Monday April 28. Buffalo-pm member Rob Raux is working to get a lecture room at UB that week. In the meantime, Randal has suggested either of two talks for our group: (1) A talk on how to teach "Learning Perl" (Might be useful if you want to present to a group of coworkers or you plan on teaching a class); (2) A talk which introduces object-oriented Perl -- Randal says it's essentially a live version of perldoc perlboot. Just get back to me at kevin@binarymojo.net sometime this week and let me know which talk you'd like to hear. I tally up that votes, then post to this list and put an announcement on the Web page at http://buffalo.pm.org when everything is finalized. OUR FELLOW TORONTO PERL MONGERS SAY "HELLO" Richard Dice ( mailto:rdice@pobox.com ) from Toronto-pm said that our new group came up in their last meeting. Toronto-pm likes to "stay in touch with other .pm's in the neighbourhood and establish good diplomatic relations." They've offered help and resources and welcome anyone in buffalo.pm to attend their meetings (Perhaps a road trip is in order later this year?). They're working with the Kingston-Waterloo PM on a "talk exchange". They also have a library of group talks on a variety of Perl subjects, that might help us with planning. That's all for now. - Kevin From eye at buffalo.edu Wed Apr 9 07:51:47 2003 From: eye at buffalo.edu (Kevin Eye) Date: Mon Aug 2 21:25:56 2004 Subject: [Buffalo-pm] BPM Group News In-Reply-To: <8164.64.65.247.81.1049832386.squirrel@my.modwest.com> Message-ID: <0643847D-6A8A-11D7-B30D-000393D1C5F2@buffalo.edu> > OUR FELLOW TORONTO PERL MONGERS SAY "HELLO" > ...Perhaps a road trip is in order later > this year?). Very cool. I went up to Toronto last June when Damian Conway was in town to see him give a talk to Toronto.pm. (If you've never seen one of his talks/shows, you're really missing out.) There must have been over 150 people there. I'd imagine that's quite a bit more than their usual turnout, but it's still quite impressive by any measure. A "talk exchange" also sounds very cool. As for Randal's talk, my vote is for the teaching perl topic. (I may be biased because I already know a lot of OO perl. :-) - Kevin -- Kevin Eye Web Applications Developer Creative Services and Marketing University at Buffalo 330 Crofts Hall Buffalo, NY 14260 eye@buffalo.edu phone (716) 645-5000 x1435 fax (716) 645-3765 From kevin at binarymojo.net Tue Apr 15 14:00:02 2003 From: kevin at binarymojo.net (Kevin Christopher) Date: Mon Aug 2 21:25:56 2004 Subject: [Buffalo-pm] $Randal_Schwartz->talk("OO"); Message-ID: <1553.206.207.153.141.1050433202.squirrel@my.modwest.com> Buffalo-pm list members: The majority who responded to my last e-mail opted for Randal's Object-Oriented Perl tutorial talk. We have a room reserved for Thursday, May 1, at 242 Bell Hall on the UB North Campus from 7-9 p.m. (Thanks, Rob Raux!). -Kevin From kevin at binarymojo.net Fri Apr 18 13:10:45 2003 From: kevin at binarymojo.net (Kevin Christopher) Date: Mon Aug 2 21:25:56 2004 Subject: [Buffalo-pm] Toronto-pm's next meeting Message-ID: <1410.206.207.153.153.1050689445.squirrel@my.modwest.com> Buffalo-pm members: I'm passing along some info from Toronto-pm's Richard Dice about their meeting next Thursday (April 24). We are all welcome to this and any other TPM meeting. I'm not planning on going myself, but by all means organize a car pool among yourselves if you're interested. Richard will be presenting on the handy debugging module Data::Dumper, and there may be another presenter or two from KW-pm that evening. Location: 2 Bloor Street West (NW corner of Bloor & Yonge, CIBC Tower) 16th Floor, classroom 8 (but please check again on the day of the talk! the room may move) Speaker: Richard Dice Title: Data::Dumper -- is there anything it can't do? URL: http://www.dice-con.com/tpm/DataDumper Description: This is meant to be a smallish talk regarding the Data::Dumper module. Once only a part of CPAN, as of Perl 5.8.0 is has been migrated into the core modlib. Data::Dumper is used to "stringify" the contents of a Perl variable (including "complex" variable). This has two main uses: * the saving of a program's state to file, so that a program can be stopped and resumed at some future point in time * debugging Examples of these uses will be given, including some (but not all) "fancy" uses of the module. Limitations will be discussed. Alternatives to Data::Dumper will also be discussed (e.g. Storable, FreezeThaw). Here's a quick Data::Dumper example... rdice@RDICELAPTOP /usr/bin/rdice $ cat dd_test.pl #!/usr/bin/perl -w use strict; use Data::Dumper; my $foo = { a => { b => { c => [ 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, sub { return "Happy Happy Joy Joy" } ] } } } ; print Data::Dumper::Dumper($foo); exit 0; rdice@RDICELAPTOP /usr/bin/rdice $ perl dd_test.pl $VAR1 = { 'a' => { 'b' => { 'c' => [ 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, sub { "DUMMY" } ] } } }; -/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/ -- Kevin
