I'm doing lots of googling around and seeing what I can find, but any hints on where good/bad areas of the city to live are (I need to be near some form of public transport and within walking distance to shops etc, since I have too bad eyesight to drive a car) or rental agencies you might know of that are good or to be avoided would be wonderful. Again, sorry for the non-Perl message (and not being able to write in Slovakian, but I promise that I will work on learning it if/when I'm living there - I like languages). Many thanks for any replies! I have to admit that my integration into the society wasn't so difficult since my wife is from Bratislava. I know that a good reference and starting point for new comers is the Slovak Spectator (http://www.spectator.sk/). It's a news paper in English for foreigners. The town of Bratislava is quite small when compared with huge towns such London, Paris or even Montréal (where I come from). Thus, in my opinion distances are quite small here. As far as I know there are no real dangerous sections in the city. You should be able to find an accommodation everywhere in the city, the trick is to find something close to the center as a lot of shops are near and two big shopping centers are close by. Public transport is good and accessible fine, although you might have to give up on the Spanish way of life and go to bed earlier as trams stop their routes after 23h00. But this shouldn't too much of a problem as generally our pubs close around that hour too, at least the pub we visit. But everything is not so perfect here, for instance we still haven't found a place for our Perl Mongers meeting. Although, since Vienna is so close (less than an hour by train) we often go to squat to their monthly meetings ;-) Are you're looking for a job here? When do you plan to come? I would gladly help you with the search, that won't be a problem. Emmanuel already send you his "foreigner" impression of Bratislava. That one is much better than our "native" description. There are no really bad areas in the city. Just some are nicer and some not that nice. ;) Form each part you should get to the city center in around 30 minutes by public transport. Supermarkets are everywhere, so there is no need for a car. > > Again, sorry for the non-Perl message (and not being able to write in > Slovakian, but I promise that I will work on learning it if/when I'm > living there - I like languages). That's not a problem. Slovakia is too small to not accept foreign languages. You are welcome. But be aware that to learn Slovak language it's really hard. (Emmanuel will tell you more about it...) English language is very popular here so you'll have no problem to survive ;) just with it. (Emmanuel, is it true?) It appears that what you get right in the heart of the old city is fairly pricey, but you can be just outside and get something equivalent for less. But yes, I do want to be close to the center for the reasons you mention. > Public transport is good and accessible fine, although you might have > to give up on the Spanish way of life and go to bed earlier as trams > stop their routes after 23h00. This also happens if the offending characters are contained in a variable reference protected by the \Q...\E quoting construct. When encountering this condition, the Perl interpreter typically crashes, but arbitrary code execution cannot be ruled out. For the stable distribution (etch), this problem has been fixed in version 5.8.8-7etch2. The unstable distribution (sid) will be fixed soon. We recommend that you upgrade your perl packages. Upgrade instructions -------------------- wget url will fetch the file for you dpkg -i file.deb will install the referenced file. If you are using the apt-get package manager, use the line for sources.list as given below: apt-get update will update the internal database apt-get upgrade will install corrected packages You may use an automated update by adding the resources from the footer to the proper configuration.
