A programmer's strength flows from code maintainability. But beware of Perl. Terse syntax... more than one way to do it... default variables. The dark side of code maintainability are they. Easily they flow, quick to join you when code you write. If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will. LUKE: Is Perl better than Python? YODA: No... no... no. Quicker, easier, more seductive. LUKE: But how will I know why Python is better than Perl? YODA: You will know. When your code you try to read six months from now. He asked me t'other day as to whether he should learn perl or python. So we entered into a heated discussion, with ended with him asking if he had sufficently wound me up. bah. It seemed to go over well and I think we should go back again this year. So in the spirit of JFDI and because: * I like Japanese food * If someone else doesn't bother Karen is going to get lumbered with organising it again I will now attempt to herd cats. So if you want to go to our Christmas/Yuletide/Chanukah/'insert your festival here' celebratory dinner which will be in the Ginger Tree on the second Monday in Dec (which cal tells me is the 10th), then reply to this message with a yea. If I'm going to book this I need numbers. So get to replying, if we need to do deposits, we can sort that out next Thursday. Please Note: Just because we've already spoken about this and you've told me you think it's a good idea doesn't mean I've booked you a place. Places will be booked for people who specifically contact me to say "I'm going, please book me a place". No, I don't actually know if it's available on the 10th, we'll find out when we try to book it. Oh yeah, I forgot to say. I'm organising this and I want to go to the Ginger tree. If you want to go somewhere else you are more than welcome to put in a rival bid. If it is successful[1], you will be organising it. andrew [1] Where successful is defined as more people want[2] to go to your venue, or on your alternative date. [2] Given the usual levels of apathy evident on this list I don't fancy your chances of convincing anybody to reply, much less agree with your crazy scheme[3]. You're still welcome to try :-) [3] Where crazy scheme is defined as going somewhere other than the Ginger tree. -- There are 10 types of people in this world, those who understand binary and those who don't. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Apparently, I can't read calendars. The second Monday in Dec is the 9th. The Ginger Tree is available and has been provisionally booked. Their Christmas Fare menu is four courses and costs £21.95 We will probably go for this menu unless people want to do different stuff. I don't think you need to book; Karen, Marc and I got a table there with no problems before the last meeting (Monday 14 Oct). They may be slightly busier on a Thursday night. However, more people are likely to be eating out after they've been paid and it's not the end of the month yet. It might be an idea to get numbers anyway so we can ask for a table the right size when we get there. It'll also let us know when everybody who's coming has turned up. I'll be there. andrew -- Aquarius: (Jan. 20 - Feb. 18) You will be the first person in almost three millennia whom the gods see fit to punish for an astounding lack of hubris. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed...
