Mike has gone back to the colonies, so the next meeting will be by one of our own! (I think.) OK, so I wouldn't mind *someone* giving a brief talk on the perl debugger, and how to use it, trace thru, stepping, what goes into what register, how we can see this, what all the silly switches mean, just how to make it work for me in everyday coding!! As this may not be to everyone's taste, I suggest splitting the meeting into several speakers with wildly different topics. So if anyone wants to give/suggest a topic, feel free to do so! And the date? Well, it is getting near to the middle of June, so we can have it then, or leave it till the start of July. If there is no consensus, then I will pick a date from my random date generating code, which lives in my head and causes a seg fault with the wife process that runs in parallel to me. I use it for almost everything I do now.[1] It has lots of advantages over HTML::Template, BlackStar::Parser and their ilk in that it's much easier to define the look and feel of multiple documents rather than one by one. e.g., when used for HTML, it's much more useful for managing the look of a *site*, whereas most of the others are good for a *page*. It makes the easy things trivial, and the difficult things possible. Or something. It DWIMs quite nicely - pass it a scalar, a list, a hash, a coderef, an object - whatever you want, and it just handles them all seamlessly. There's a good intro to it in last year's TPC proceedings - Andrew's bringing back some copies for everyone. Tony [1] Other than BlackStar of course, and I have plans there too ;) We should be able to move seamlessly to it, by changing the delimiters... -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... As virtual reality simulators assume larger roles in helicopter combat training, programmers have gone to great lengths to increase the realism of their scenarios, including detailed landscapes and, in the case of the Northern Territory's Operation Phoenix, herds of kangaroos (since disturbed animals might well give away a helicopter's position). The head of the Defence Science & Technology Organisation's Land Operations/Simulation division reportedly instructed developers to model the local marsupials' movements and reactions to helicopters. Being efficient programmers, they just re-appropriated some code originally used to model infantry detachment reactions under the same stimuli, changed the mapped icon from a soldier to a kangaroo, and increased the figures' speed of movement. Eager to demonstrate their flying skills for some visiting American pilots, the hotshot Aussies "buzzed" the virtual kangaroos in low flight during a simulation. The kangaroos scattered, as predicted, and the visiting Americans nodded appreciatively... then did a double-take as the kangaroos reappeared from behind a hill and launched a barrage of Stinger missiles at the hapless helicopter. (Apparently the programmers had forgotten to remove that part of the infantry coding.) The lesson? Objects are defined with certain attributes, and any new object defined in terms of an old one inherits all the attributes. The embarrassed programmers had learned to be careful when reusing object-oriented code, and the Yanks left with a newfound respect for Australian wildlife. Simulator supervisors report that pilots from that point onward have strictly avoided kangaroos, just as they were meant to.
