Learn to make a persistent connection to the channel. Talk to the lurkers (who are hanging out there). Be patient, sometimes people take a little while to notice you are there. Use the nick (nickname) of the person to make their IRC client highlighted the channel.

Hi all,
I saw the IRC conversation, I was not connected to my client when that
conversation happened, so let me first introduce myself :). I'm Upasana
aka sweet_kid (on IRC). I live in Delhi. At present, I'm a GNOME's
Outreach Program for Women intern in TPF, I'm working on Moose. I read
about the Bangalore-Perl-Mongers organization on github in the IRC
conversation, please add me in that organization. My github profile's
URL is https://github.com/Sweet-kid . I may not be able to participate
in the meetings which happen during 9 am to 7 pm (UTC+0530) on IRC, so
please try not to schedule meetings during that time (just a request).
Also, let me know if I could help you people in any way (via coding,
encouraging people to get involved with perl etc). I'm new to this FOSS
community, so I may take sometime to understand how things work. Please
do let me know if I do something wrong. Looking forward to know more
about you people.

Thanks.
